John Laymance served in the defense of Lancaster Co PA in 1781. In the fourth Battallion of Lancaster, under Captain Ewing. He served againunder the Lancaster militia in 1784 in the frontier defense against the indiansunder Capt. Joseph Huber in the sixth company of the sixth battallion. **Seemuster roll of the second section of the eighth battallion of Lancastertroops**" John Lauman 29 April 1781 to June 1781". Page #817, Vol. VII, Series V, PAarchives. Three men who were believed to be his brothers, Ludwig, John, and Phillip Laymance are in the same company. John is said to have been the son ofJohn Laymance Sr. Johns wife per family stories was Malinda Jane Charleton. No writtenproof has ever been found. According to early deeds, Johns wife was named Pheobe(last name was Morris according to John F. Riley). John Migrated to into the Carolinas and was said to have settled on the French Broad River, becoming a salt merchant andmanufacturer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lemmons, John: Deed #1857 Roane County Tennessee: 10 acres on Little Mudcreek, a water of Emorys River...both sides of the Turnpike Road. Lemmons, John: Deed #9 July 14 1814 Roan County Tennessee: 22 1/2 acresand the waters of Emory River...both sides of Turnpike Road.. both sides of MudCreek. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There are many more deeds listed. It is obvious that John had migratedinto what is now Morgan County Tennessee by 1814. John is reported by agrandson to have spoke as fast as lightening. He spoke both French and English andhad such an indesrcibable French accent and burr to his tounge. His English was sothick with accent that he could hardly be understood. As he pronouncedLaymance, it was similar to Lemonz, with a strong accent on the last syllable. Theneighbors frequently cut it short and said Lemmons. Two of his sons adopted thisway of spelling. When John died in 1837 he left a large amount of property and belongings and according to a document filed in Chancery Court at RoaneCounty, Tennessee on March 23 1852, he left no will....."Having left this life not having made and published any last will and testimate that has ever beenproved and secured." The document was an argument among his heirs regarding land distribution. Pheobe Morris Laymance was 61 years old at the time of Johns death. Heleft her and of course most of the minor children were placed in her custody, except William, who was handicapped and believed to be retarded. He is referedto as an "idiotic or lunatic." Pheobe sold the house and belongings to JohnLaymance, her son in December 1849, yet she continued to live on the property. John Laymance is said to be buried at Flat Fork Cemetary, near Wartburg, Tennessee within a large rock enclosure. It is unmarked, yet nearby is a similiar rock enclosure with five trees growing out of the center of it.This believed to be Pheobes grave. Flat Fork Cemetary is located on the South East side of Flat Fork Road, off of US62 South out of Wartburg, Same side of road of Brushy MountainPrison. The following information was provided by John F. Riley, 8113 Runnymeade Rd., Frederick, Md. 21702; Tel. (301) 562-4053. John Riley spells middle name Louis. From John; John born in the 1740's in Normandie, now France. Came to America with his two brothers Isaac and Jacob aboard the ship "SallyGally" from Rotterdam, Holland toPhiladelphia, Pa. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- on 27 Sep. 1746. All three brothers served in The Revolutionary War. John Louis Laymance married and had at least one son born 1770. He married 1. Melinda Jane Charleston (5G Grand Parents) & 2. Phoebe Morris.
