Don, I'm looking for direct descendents of Burch. Not only am I researchingthe Cadwell & Burch families of Laurens County, GA but would like to research what is known as the "Burch Settlement" here. Anyway, you may find someof this useful...even interesting. Eliza Burch is the daughter of Benjamin Burch Sr & Sarah Hamilton. Eliza was born 22 Feb 1826 in Laurens County; died 23 Feb 1975 also in LaurensCo. She married Stringer Calhoun first (don't have a date). From that union, she had at three children: Sarah A. Calhoun, born abt 1844; Benjamin Hamilton Calhoun, born abt 1848; and Charlotte Calhoun, born about 1850. I'm not sure when Calhoun died. Eliza then married Joel Cadwell in 1858. Joel was the son of JamesCadwell (born abt 1757) and Sabra. Some believe Sabra was a Harrelson, however, there is no supporting documentation for that. Joel was born in 1835. He was one of 5 boys; all joined the Confederate Army in May of 1862. Alldied in the war except for the youngest, Andy. Joel died of diarrhea onNovember 6, 1862. Eliza & Joel had 3 kids: Matthew, Mary A., and Eliza D.J. Cadwell. I do believe that Charlotte took the Cadwell name somewhere down the line as well. Eliza then married Clark. His first name has still not been found. When she died in 1875, son Benjamin was the Administrator of the estate. Benjamin, Sarah, & Charlotte paid a $800 bond, per child, as guardians of Matthew, Mary & Eliza. There is a town called Cadwell in Laurens County. That is where I liveand how I began this adventure in family history (my husband is a Cadwell & Burch). The question was how did the town name connect to the family. According to (think its Frances) Holt in "A History of Cadwell GA", the story is: Rebecca Lowery married Matthew Cadwell. They had 3 children. Matthew died at the age of 33 (1888) after being struck by lighteningwhile riding a horse in a storm. Lowery then married C.O. Burch. He also died relatively young. It was Burch that was the major landowner in Laurens County. Benjamin Burch Sr., (ggrandfather of C.O. I do believe) owned the southwestern corner of Laurens County. Anyway, Mrs. Lowery-Cadwell-Burch wanted to create a town in 1905. Her first choice was to name in Burch since the land was inherited from her marriage to Burch. There wasalready a post office in Georgia with the Burch name, so the state declined. She then decided to name the town Cadwell, after the fist husband. The townof Cadwell was incorporated in 1907.----Lynn Prurtte
