Jedediah Stevens (Jedediah, Henry, Henry), was born at Canaan,Connecticut May 11, 1757, and died at Canisteo, New York, January 26,1830. He married January 1, 1778, at Goshen, Abigail Corey. He was in theRevolution at the Battle of Wyoming, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1778, wherehis brother Rufus was killed. The Pennsylvania court decided against thetitle of the Connecticut settlers and he, with many others, leftPennsylvania and settled on a large farm in what is now Canisteo, NewYork. His wife died August 28, 1825. About 1800 he united with theMethodish Church and became a local preacher. A license was given him,dated May 27, 1815, and renewed June 6, 1818. The following was takenfrom the original: "To all whom it may concern--greeting: Receive the bearer thereof,Jedediah Stephens, as a local elder in the M. E. Church--and in goodstanding. His piety, Chrstian deportment and his services in the Churchof Christ, entitle him to the confidence and affection of his bretheren.July 9, 1828. A. Abell, P. E. Genesee Dis." *Some records show date of marriage as January 1, 1778 and some showJanuary 3, 1778. ** The above information was obtained from the "Stephens/StevensGenealogy" by Plowdon Stevens (1909). CONFLICTING INFORMATION FROM "THE STEVENS GENEALOGY" JOSHUA C. STEPHENS, of Canisteo, N. Y JOSHUA C. STEPHENS, of Canisteo, N. Y., purchased six hundred acres oftimber land, some fifty acres of which he cleared prior to his death. Hewas a man of little book knowledge but possessed much natural ability andupon settling in the new country was soon recognized as a worthy citizen.While Canisteo belonged to Ontario Co. in 1793-4, he represented his townas supervisor. In early life he was a member of the Congregationalchurch. About 1800 he became a member of the Methodist church and, from1812 until his death, he was a local preacher of that denomination. Hehad: I. Abigail Stephens, who was born about 1779. II. Silas Stephens, who was born about 1781. III. Nathan Stephens, who was born on December 8, 1783, in New York. Whenhe was seven years old the family removed to Canisteo and he was broughtup to know all the hardships of the pioneer. He married on May 14,1804,Rachel Gilbert, of Addison. She was the daughter of Elisha Gilbert, whowas one of the first settlers of that town. She died on February 7, 1850and he died on April 3, 1862. He resided about eight years in Canisteo onwhat was known as the Gilbert estate which was later owned by Col. HenryBaldwin. The remainder of his life was spent on the old homestead inCanisteo where he erected commodious buildings and made many otherimprovements among which was the Methodist Tavern that he had assistedhis father in building. He was a staunch member of the Democratic partyand cast his first vote for President Thomas Jefferson. He was elected tofill many offices in his town. He was town clerk for several terms andalso school commissioner and in the interest of education, was a strongand able advocate and did much to aid its progress. Although a farmer hewas very fond of hunting and trapping and it was estimated that forthirty years of his life he averaged killing one hundred deer annually.They had: 1. Elis' a G. Stephens, who resided in Steuben Co. 2. Jedediah H. M. Stephens, who resided in Alleghany Co. 3. Ebenezer C. Stephens, who resided in Alleghany Co. 4. Franklin D. Stephens, who resided in Steuben Co. 5. Joshua C. Stephens, who was born on May 30, 1816 and who resided inCanisteo, Steuben Co., N. Y. He married on August 3, 1845, Hannah Howard,who was born on September 30, 1823 at Enfield, Co nn. Her parents removedfrom Enfield about 1825. He received a fair education, and was a teacherfor several terms. He resided on the old homestead his whole life,employing himself at farming and hunting was closely allied to the bestinterests of the town and ever took part in all local improvements. Theeducation of the young was his special care. He was educated in theDemocratic party of which his grandfather was an unswerving advocate, Hewas for many years school inspector of the town and subsequently, in1850, he was superintendent of schools. He was town clerk and supervisorfor several terms. In 1842 he became a member of the Morning Star Lodge,No. 65 in Canisteo of which his father and grandfather were the founders.In 1854, he was appointed Eminent Commander of the Edward's Commandery ofHarnettville, now called De Molay Commandery No. 22, which position heheld for two years. His connection with Masonry was continuous after hefirst became a member, having been called during that time to fillvarious official positions in the several bodies. His pride was that,"For ninety-six years not one by the name of Stephens has been punishedfor crime in this county." He had: i. Ira G. Stephens ii. James A. Stephens iii. Harris M. Stephens iv.
