He joined the Continental Army in 1778 as a substitute for Henry Brenton. Henry had been drafted in Monongahela County, Virginia (now in West Virginia), or in Monongahela, Washington, Pennsylvania. Robert served in Captain Swearingen's Company under Colonel William Crawford and Colonel Brodhead. He went on General McIntosh's expedition to Ohio fighting the Indians and served 4 months. He served 1 month under Captain Peter Sturgus in 1779. Then in 1781, he served another month under Captain John Dougherty. And lastly in 1782, he served one month under Captain Samuel Kirkham. He was listed in the Washington Township, Clark County, Indiana Census of 1820 and in the 1830 Census of Clark County, Indiana in the area Northeast of the State Road. In 1820, he has in his household: 3 free white males under ten years, 4 free white males between ten and sixteen, one free white male between sixteen and eighteen, one free white male between sixteen and under twenty-six, two free white males forty-five and upwards, one free white female under ten years, one free white female between ten and sixteen, one free white female between twenty-six and forty-five, and one free white female forty-five and upwards. In 1830 he has one male between five and ten, one male between ten and fifteen, two males between fifteen and twenty, one male between twenty and thirty, one male between seventy and eighty and one male between eighty and ninety, one female between five and ten, one female between ten and fifteen, one female between forty and fifty, and one female between eighty and ninety. He died after March 4, 1833 and was buried in "Old Antioch Graveyard". He was a Revolutionary War Veteran, and is listed with the Ann Rogers Clark Chapter Daughters of the Revolution. William BRENTON and Modecai COLE (clergyman), residents of Clark County, testified in their behalf. - Pension File #S.16059, S.16061 and S.16062. While residing in Monongahela Co., Penna., Robert BRENTON (as a substitute for Henry BRENTON) and John BRENTON entered the service in 1778; served in Captain Andrew SWEARINGEN's Company under Colonels William CRAWFORD and BRODHEAD; marched to Pittsburgh; went on General McINTOSH's expedition to what was later the state of Ohio; assisted in building a fort at Tuscarawas; after which they marched to Fort McINTOSH, on the Ohio River, and were discharged, having served four months. - Pension Files #S.16059 & S.16062. Robert BRENTON, John BRENTON, William BRENTON, Adam BRENTON, and James BRENTON enlisted again in 1782, at Bryant's Station; served in Captain Samuel KIRKHAM's Company, Colonel Benjamin LOGAN's Regiment and went on an expedition to the Shawnee towns in Ohio under General George Rogers CLARK where they were in a skirmish with the Indians. "The tour commenced in October and they returned in November; they started from Harrodsburg and marched to Cincinnati; thence up the Miami above said river; destroyed five Indian towns and returned;" The same year they "started from Harrodsburg and went to Bryants station; thence to the Blue Licks and went to the Blue Licks and buried the dead slain in the battle of the Blue Licks; then returned." - Pension Files #S.16059, S.16061, S.16062, R.1178, and W.2518.
