GARETT SEATH HAZEN
May 22, 1921 - March 20, 2016
With great sadness we announce Garett's passing, following a sudden stroke. He was predeceased by wife Rosemary, and leaves behind his sons Hugh and Heath (Suzie), stepdaughters Christabel (Lyn) and Lindsay (Dave), grandchildren Robyn, Fraser and Jenna, and great-granddaughter Elsa. Also grieving his departure are cousin Gudrun and 'adopted' granddaughter Heather (Kai) and great-granddaughters Islie and Madeline. In Germany, beloved sister Annelene and three generations of nieces and nephews will always remember their favourite uncle.
Born Geert Howaldt, Garett came from a family of shipbuilders. He took to the water at a young age, becoming a world-class competitive sailor, and continued to pursue his passion after emigrating to Canada from Germany in his early 30's. He built his own sailboat with trailer and travelled to regattas in both Canada and the U.S. During the course of his marriage to Rosemary, Garett's considerable expertise as a cabinetmaker was put to good use when he built a large addition on their home in West Vancouver. Garett always had a project on the go, from making sewing cabinets for his stepdaughters to building furniture pieces for the home. Later, he was the sole builder of a four bedroom house on their property on Porpoise Bay, near Sechelt. This involved mixing his own cement for the basement and foundation of the house, as well as plumbing, electrical, carpentry and masonry work.
But people were the most important thing in Garett's life. Any project underway would be set aside when someone dropped by, in favour of a cup of coffee and an hour or two of conversation with friends, neighbours, children or especially grandchildren.
Garett was an inspiration to many members of the Hollyburn Country Club, where he attended fitness classes regularly past his 90th birthday. It was there that he met "my favourite instructor, Heather", who with her daughters brought much joy to his life.
At the ripe age of 94 Garett, fiercely independent, was still living in his family home, growing a vegetable garden (his bean soup, made from his own beans, was legendary), canning dozens of jars of pears and plums from his fruit trees, making jam and drying huge bags of apples as special treats for his grandchildren. He enjoyed weekly trips to the West Van Seniors Centre to play cards with Gudrun and other friends. The distance separating him from his German family was overcome with annual visits there, frequent phone calls and, in the past 20 years, by his computer addiction. The wonderful emails he sent to friends and relatives were full of his gentle humour and over the years literally thousands of photos made their way between Germany and Canada over the internet.
A true example of 'a life well-lived', this lovely man who touched so many hearts will never be forgotten.
