' Mrs. Mary E. Carr
Mrs. Mary E. Carr, widow of the late Thomas Carr, passed away at her
home
near Ringwood on Thursday, April 18, at the advancedage of 85 years.
Mary E. Hamilton, daughter of Rev. Charles and Sarah Hamilton, was born
at Canterburg, Orange county, N.Y., August 5, 1832. She was one of a
family of three brothers and one sister, all of whom have passed away but
one brother, John Hamilton, of Milwaukee, Wis. She came West with her
parents from New York and located at Greenwood in 1852.
On Nov. 3, 1855, she was united in marriage to Thomas Carr. They
commenced their wedded life on the homefarm where the remainder of their
earthly days were spent. Mrs. Carr living in this one home for 63 years.
Mr. Carr died on April 30, 1908, at the age of76 years, he having lived
on
the same farm for more than 70 years.
Four children came to bless this home, Alice E., (now Mrs. Robt. McLean
of Woodstock),Frankie E., (Mrs. Charles Stephenson of Ringwood), Charles
H., living on theold home farm, and Joseph E., of Vixburg, Mich.
Mrs. Carr was a representativetype of the pioneer citizen. Sturdy of
character, enbracing nobel Christianideals, industrious, devoted to her
home and its interests, she was held in high regard and affection by a
wide
circle of friends. Hers was the rare privilege of witnessing the steady
and phenomenal growth of our great middle westfrom a sparsely settled
pioneer community to the great farming and commercialcountry which it now
is. What a heritage was hers to hand down to posterity--what rich
experiences her ripened years have rounded out!
Besides the two daughters and two sons, Mrs. Carr is survived by seven
grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held from Mrs. Carr's late home on Saturday, April
20, Rev. N.A. Sunderlin officiating and speaking beautiful and appropriate
words regarding the life of this esteemed pioneer resident, referring to
tht charm of the old home, the great wealth of mother love and the
devotion
bestowed upon her family.
Interment was made in the nearby cemetery, besideher husband, who
preceded her in death ten years ago.
