According to the 1880-1900 U.S. Census Record, Nellie Jane's namewas "Jane Hellen Clements". (Her birth name was Jane Ellen Clements)We always knew her as Nellie Jane and I doubt that my mother, Emily, knewany different. Nellie had mentalproblems most of her life and all weknew about her was that she had two brothers who fought in a war(probably WW1). She did love to garden, cook and crochet. According tothis Census record, she also had a sister named Catherine. The parentsof her mother, Mary, were born in Ireland. "Auter Kattie" was themisspelled name on this census record for Catherine showing she had a sonabout 5 years old. (I'm not sure this son named Phillip belonged toCatherine. His last name was listed as "Clements"). Nellie just nevermentioned having a sister and I was surprised when I saw the names on theCensus record. (SEE NOTE BELOW FOR UPDATE)
Nellie became deaf at age 4 due to meningitis and didn't attend theKentucky School for the Deaf until age 9. Being sent away to school wasprobably very traumatic for her. Nellie had a mental illness most ofher life. When her son, Albert died in a car wreck in 1937, Nellie's mental state began to get worse. She took his death very hard.
Nellie and George met at the state school, Kentucky School for theDeaf, and married in Jeffersonville, IN on June 18, 1906, after theygraduated.
On 1880 Census Record for Lafayette Township, Floyd County,Indiana,(copy is in book) I found Nellie's family. This record was two yearsbefore Nellie was born in 1882. I discovered she had more brothers andsisters than we ever knew. They were not all on the 1900 Census and onesister's name is different. Her siblings are:
William age 11 born in Indiana
Thomas age 8 born in Kentucky
Anna age 6 born in Indiana
Catherine age 4 born in Indiana (this is "Auter Kattie"from 1900 Census)
Mary age 2 born in Indiana
Walter age 2 mos. born in Indiana (Floyds Knobs, IN)
The census taker must have mistaken Catherine's name by thinking hermother, Mary, said "my other daughter Catherine or Kattie" and he putdown what he "heard"... Auter Kattie.
9/1997 - On a trip to Indiana, I found a birth record for NellieJane in a Book of Births - Starting 1882 in the library of New Albany,IN. She was listed as "Female Clemons" - last name misspelled...shouldbe Clements. She was born in "Mooresville, IN" - which later becameknown as Floyds Knobs, IN by 1870). Floyds Knobs is quite small andlocated in the hills right by New Albany. It is made up of many farms. The family moved back and forth from New Albany across the river toLouisville, KY several times. I went to Louisville and found St. John'sCemetery where Gustavus and Mary Clements are buried. The cemetery wasbadly vandalized and reading most of the headstones was impossible. Fromthe map, it shows they were buried in one of the corners of the rectangleshaped cemetery. I drove by the address of their home and it was nolonger there. Part of St. Cecelia's Catholic Church was built on thelot. I did find homes of two of Nellie's sisters, Anna Belle and Mary,on Bank Street. I took pictures of the small wood frame homes.
November 1, 1997 - I received a copy of the Baptism of "Jane EllenClemons", daughter of Gustavus and Mary Kinlan Clemons. Again, the nameis spelled differently. Jane Ellen is my Grandmother, and she went by"Nellie Jane". She was baptized March 6, 1882 in St. Mary-of-the-KnobsCatholic Church in Floyds Knobs, IN. Sponsors were George Byrne andMaggy Clemons. (Maggy Clemons may have been a sister of GustavusClements..more research needed to find more of his family).

Regarding names: --Helen can sometimes be spelled Hellen, but often istranscribed as Ellen - or can become Nellie. I found this out whilesearching for birth records of my Grandmother Nellie Jane. I did notknow her birth name was "Jane Ellen" or it could have really been "Ellen Jane" since she went by "Nellie Jane".
