Notizen zu dieser Person
"Clara Lee rounded out the ONE DOZEN children of the Albert and Marie Antoinette Duflot family. She was born in Mayfield, Kentucky May 21, 1898 in a little four-room rent house on the Creason place about1-1/4 mile east of town. She graduated from the Texarkana Arkansas HighSchool in 1918. She developed what might be called a natural talent formusic by taking a correspondence course with the Columbia Conservatory ofMusic. She used her knowledge to great advantage when she served asrecreation chairman of the Bowie County W.P.A. during the depth of thedepression. She also taught public school and band music at Eylau gradeand high school near Texarkana. She has also been a substitute teacherin this school for the past 18 years. During this time she has directedthe Sorsby Dance Band composed principally of her children.
For fourteen years, this band has furnished the dance music everySaturday night for the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She has sponsoredprograms for soldiers in Army Hospitals, and for a number of years herband has played for square dances for various civic clubs and fraternalorganizations. She has been the chairman of music in the Eylau P.T.A.since it was organized twenty-nine years ago and for the St. EdwardsCatholic annual minstrel show for fourteen years. At present she isthepianist for the Eylau Methodist Church in which capacity she has beenactive for twenty-seven years. The demands for her services haveextended to that of organist for the Border Chapter 211 of the EasternStar of Texarkana, to pianist forthe Dixie Splawn School of Dance, andto staging civic musical programs throughout the Four State area.Undoubtedly, Clara is the most active community worker of any of thechildren of Albert Duflot.
She married William Givan Sorsby July 23, 1918. When her husbandhad surgery to remove his right lung, Clara carried the burden of familysupport. Of this experience she said, "The Lord has blessed us in many, many ways. We managed to get along somehow. We met all of our medicalbills and today we owe no one".
Four children were born to Bill and Clara: Billie Duflot, Emory Dale, Norma Jean and Claire Marie (Dollie). On October 10, 1954, Clara and Bill adopted a little girl whom they named Jeanne Jan whose birthday was April 16, 1954. I asked Clara what possessed her to assume this obligation so late in their lives. She replied, "I did not want therocking chair to get me and besides we want her for the joy of living".Personally, I don't believe I ever saw a more beautiful six months oldchild."
