TOD: "OBIT" of Henry Clay Richards was in "Twigs and Branches of a Richards Family in America" copy of page sent by Mildred Jarmer Hensel Henry Clay Richards died at the home of his niece, Mrs. R E Perry, Nov 17, 1917, aged seventy-five years, one month and twenty days, after an illness of nearly a year. Mr Richards was born at Massena Springs, N.Y., Sept 27, 1842 He remained with his parents until he was eight years old, then began to work at three dollars per month, but when the time came for him to receive his earnings, he had done so well, his employer paid him the rate of five dollars. He used his money for clothes and schooling. For three summers he worked this way, attending school in the winter. At the age of eleven he went to work in a livery stable for eleven dollars a month, the next spring obtaining twelve dollars. He then went to Potsdam High School for four terms, working during the summers, for his board, clothes and tuition. He next drove stage coach for one season and attended the Columbia Veterinary School at New York for two terms. He then went into active practice with Bell & Farnsworth at Massena Springs and remained there for three years. In 1866 he came west and practiced in Milwaukee after which he got the land fever, came to Eau Claire [Wis] county purchased some property and began to farm, which occupation he followed for sixteen years. He was married to Sarah Reed in January, 1864, who survives him with four children and seventeen grandchildren. The children are Mrs Hattie Bennatts, George Washington Richards and Lida Richards of Tacoma, Wash. and Mrs Bessie Richards of Norfolk, NY. There are also left to mourn his loss, four sisters; Mrs Jane Runion of this city, Mrs Eugenia Sargent of Enterprise, Oregon, Mrs Etta Wilson of Ferry Point, Canada and Mrs Eunice Holden of Neenah, Wis. The deceased and his family came to Eau Claire county, June 6, 1866. In the fall of 1868 he became a member of the Baptist church of this city, remaining here until the fall of 1914 when he went to Tacoma, Wash. intending to spend the rest of his life there. In January, he contracted pneumonia and never fully recovered. Death resulted from dropsy. During May, 1917 he returned to the home of his cousin, A. K. Richards at Elk Mound for medical treatment. The last of August he entered the Sacred Heart Hospital at Eau Claire and five weeks later, Mr Perry brought him to his home in this city where the last six weeks of illness were made comfortable until his death. Funeral services were held from the home of his sister, Mrs Jane Runion, on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. C. H. Scheick officiating with internment in the Augusta cemetery. The relatives and friends have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. Those attending the funeral from out of town were: Mrs M. A. Holden, Neenah; A. E. Richards and Mr Campfield, both of Elk Mound; C. U. Minto and Mrs. Carl Hanson, Chippewa Falls; Mr and Mrs A C Minto, Eau Claire and Mrs J M Hilgert, Altoona.
