Samuel Allen was almost three years old when his father died in 1754. His
widowed mother, Phebe Scarlet Allen, with her five living childrenarrived in
Old Orange County (now Alamance) in 1762. He grew up in Randolph Co., NCand
learned many trades. He made tools, guns, and coffins, among otherthings. He
also worked with precious metals. He made cufflinks of silver, and manythings
of iron. It has been said that he made bricks and built his own home with
them. At the time of his death, he owned over 800 acres in one tract onLittle
River in southern Randolph County, NC, in addition to the plantation onwhich
he lived, the total being well over 1,000 acres.

The will of Samuel Allen required son, John Allen to pay sisters Ann and
Mary Allen every year, ten bushels of wheat and ten bushels of corn.

Most of the information on this family was found on a sheet of paper in an
old bible belonging to John White and wife, Jane (Wilson) White. It isnot
known how old these notes are or by whom written. Furnished by SarahWilson
Jones who copied the notes.

MARRIAGE OF SAMUEL ALLEN, SON OF JOHN ALLEN & PHEBE SCARLETT

Whereas Samuel Allen of Guilford County in the Province of NorthCarolina, son
of John Allen deceased, and Hannah Cox of the County & Province aforesaid,
having declared their intention of marriage with each other before several
monthly meetings of the People called Quakers at Cane Creek in OrangeCounty of
the Province aforesaid according to the good order used among them andhaving
consent of parents & relations concerned. Their Proposals of marriage was
allowed and by the said meeting and now they may certify whom it mayconcern
that of the full accomplishing their intentions this seventeenth day ofthe
twelveth month 1775, they the said Samuel Allen & Hannah Cox appeared in a
public meeting of the aforesaid People and others at Holly Spring MeetingHouse
in Guilford County aforesaid, and the said Samuel Allen taking the saidHannah
Cox by the hand did in a solemn manner openly declare that he took thesaid
Hannah Cox to be his wife, Promising with the Lord's assistance to beunto her
a faithful & loving husband until death separates them, or words to that
purpose, and then and there in the same assembly the said Hannah Cox didin
like manner declare that she took the said Samuel Allen to be her husband,
Promising with the Lord's assistance to be unto him a faithful and lovingwife
until death separates them, or words to the same purpose. And moreover,they
the said Samuel Allen and Hannah Cox: she according to the custom ofmarriage
assuming the name of her Husband as a further confirmation thereof andthen and
there to these presents set their hands.
And we being present at the Solemnization of their said marriage &subscription
