Robert Sandfort writes: Johann Heinrich was born in Engter, a small town about 25 miles south of Menslage. He emigrated along with his family in the autum of 1839, arriving in New Orleans on December12, 1839. The entire family arrived together except for the eldest son, Johann Gerhard Friedrich, who probably came earlier by himself. After their marriage, Anna Maria and Johann Henrich took up residence in St. Louis where he worked as a ship s carpenter. He continued in this trade the rest of his working life.
Based on information from Armand Spielman, Johann Heinrich Spielmann obtained his license from the Port of St. Louis as Master of the Steamboat Enterprise on August 17, 1865. His occupation is listedas river captain in the 1866 St. Louis City Directory and as riverman in 1867 and 1868. There are several mentions of J. H. Spielmann as Captain of the Enterprise in ads and shipping news items inthe Daily Missouri Democrat in 1866. Records indicate that Spielmann sold the Enterprise to William Thurton on Nov 13, 1867.
Robert Sandfort writes: On February 24, 1846, Johann and Anna Maria purchased an undivided half interest in a two family house on the east side of 4th Street (also known as North 9th Street). They purchased this property in partnership with his mother and father. On November 14, 1848, they filed a deed of partion in which Johann and Anna Maria took the north half of the property, and his parentsthe south half. At the same time, they mortgaged their half of the property to his father. It is known from the 1850 Census that they were by then living with his parents on Lebeaume Street, between 9th and Broadway in a house owned by his parents.

This was the house that Hermann Sandfort had bought for his daughter s use.
