:: Deed for Pemberton (Thornsberry) Cemetery in Hawkeye, Mo ::

William Pemberton deeded a one acre plot of his personal land for use as a family cemetery in Hawkeye, Mo., off BB Hwy. Though this cemetery is commonly referred to as Thornsberry Cemetery, it's official and proper name is Pemberton Cemetery. For many years Sarah Ann (Pemberton) Benes, William grand-daughter took responsiblity for the care of the cemetery, going so far asto install a culvert so visitors could easily get to the cemetery and replacing headstones that were either unreadable or broken.
The original deed was found in the possession of my grandfather, Larry Joe Sanders, at his passing. It reads:

"This Indenture, made on the 20th of November, 1893, by and between William Pemberton and Lucinda O. Pemberton, his wife, of Pulaski County, Missouri, parties of the first part and the County Court in the county of Pulaski in the state of Missouri part 4 of the second part:
Witnesseth, that the said parties of the first part, in consideration of the sum of 25 dollars to them paid by the said part 4 of the second part, receipt of which is hereby acknowledged,do by these presents Grant, Bargain and Sell, Convey and Confirm unto said part 4 the second part, and their successors in office heirs and assigns, the following described Lots, Tracts orParcels of Land, lying, being, and situate in the County of Pulaski and State of Missouri, to-wit all:

One (1) acre in a square form in the Northwest corner of the northeast quarter of the Northwest quarter of Section No six (6), Township number thirty-seven (37) of range no (13) thirteen. This land is deed to the County Court of Pulaski County Mo and the successors in office for burial purposes forever."

The document bears William Pemberton's signature and his signature for his wife Lucinda, along with her mark.
