Info from Greg Theissen, Arden Hills, Ramsey Co, Minnesota Jan 2002 I don't know much more about Joe and Barbara, but I will give you thisquote about the Pothens that I found in a book in the Hennepin County library. The family biography of the Pothen family, appears in a small volume called Pioneer chronicles. Limited 1st ed.,977.604, from the Edina Public Library, Edina, Minnesota. There is nothing more in the volumeabout the Pothens. [This account is written by one of Joe and Barbara's descendents:] "The Pothen Family were Territorial Pioneers in Minnesota having arrived in the spring of 1854 and making their home in Rosetown, now named Roseville. Great-great-grandfather Hubert Pothen and his wife Susan Yoast had lived in the town of Huningen, Germany. The family home was located very near the Catholic Church. They were devoted Roman Catholics. From this union three sons: Joseph, Nicolas, William and four daughters: Anna Margaretta, Susanne, Anna Marie, and Helen were born. The death of great-great-grandmother on ChristmasDay in 1852, the high taxes assessed to pay for the many wars, the inability to make a goodliving, and the restlessness of the three sons (now young men) was a heavy burden. Great-great-grandfather Hubert made the decision to go to America. Early in 1853 the oldest son, Joseph, wouldgo to Saint Paul, Minnesota an area where many other German families were settling. Joseph found the land to look very promising. With this news, Hubert sold the family home in Huningen, packed up his family and all the worldly goods they could carry. After traveling across land and sea, they arrived in Hoboken, New Jersey. Now for the long, long journey to Minnesota Territory. Upon their arrival the three Pothen sons became farmers. Their farms were located at Cleveland and Roselawn Avenues, Cleveland and Larpenteur Avenues, and on Snelling Avenue south of Como Avenue. Joseph, who was to become my great-grandfather, married the daughter of another Rosetown farmer, Barbara Moller in the Assumption German Catholic Church in Saint Paul. From their marriage came six sons: Hubert, Nicholas, John Nicholas, John Joseph,Franz Heinrich, Wilhelm Mathias, and three daughters: Anna Maria, Anna Katharina, and Maria Magdalena. Grandfather Franz Heinrich (Frank Henry) married Mary Ann Fritz, the daughter of Josephine Jasper and Adam Fritz, grocers. They had two sons, Frank William and Henry Joseph, plus three daughters, Agnes Elizabeth, Julia Barbara, and Blanche Marie. Frank Henry foundedthe F.H. Pothen Plumbing and Heating Company, one of Saint Paul's first. His wife, Mary Ann founded the Pothen Reality Company, which she owned until her demise on April 5, 1951."
