Franz Mathaes (Frank Matthew) Mathein immigrated to America from Laudenbach on the Main (near Miltenberg), Bavaria, Germany with his brother Joseph Valentine Mathein on the ship Olbers arriving in New York on 8 November 1851. He and his brother settled in Calhoun Co., IL working for Andrew Uhrig, who with his brother Joseph in St. Louis had a steamboat and lumber business, cutting cordwood in Calhoun Co. and shipping it to the St. Louis riverfront by steam boat.
Frank Mathein married Appolonia Meyer in St. Louis, MO on 1 April 1857 by Justice of the Peace John Vogel. The marriage record indicates that both were from Calhoun Co., Illinois. Their first child, Joseph August Mathein was born in Hardin, Calhoun Co., IL on 9 November 1857 according to his obituary. Their second child Lena was born in Lincoln, Logan Co., IL on 9 August 1859 according to her obituary. Frank and Appolonia Mathein moved from Calhoun Co., IL to Lincoln in Logan Co. probably in 1858 or early 1859. They had 4 more children in Lincoln, and Frank worked there as a laborer and died there on 10 March 1888 at the age of 65 years.
