Charles/ Carl/ Chuck was the oldest of 9 children in the Wagner Family. He attended St. Aloysius School and then graduated from Cathederal Latin High School with honors. There he played on the football team serving as the Captain and was awardedseveral honors in that field. He graduated with top honors from the University of Dayton as an Electrical Engineer also earning many honors on the football team again serving as the Captain. He began working with the Cleveland Electric Ill. Co.as an Electrical Engineer and remained with that company for several months before the death of his father, Anton, on January 9, 1939. He then entered the bakery business to assist his mother run the business for 2 years until he was called intothe U.S.Army as Lt. Charles R. Wagner on Feb. 4, 1942 during World War 11. He entered as a Lieutenant of 90th Infantry Unit and was stationed in Texas before the Unit was assigned to action. As Captain Charles Wagner, he was sent to England withhis Unit aboard the Ship Kungsholm. In England he was engaged in several battles before they were sent to Normandy, France on June 6, 1942 aboard the Ship Excelsior. There he was engaged in several battles before he was killed in action on July12, 1944. For his heroisn and leadership in his first battle he was awarded the Silver Star and after another heroic effort in his 2nd battle he was warded the Oak Leaf Cluster to the Silver Star. He received the Purple Heart (Posthumous), the American Theatre Ribbon, World War 11 Victory Ribbon, American Defense Service Ribbon, Europeon-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the Bronze Service Medal. His body was first buried in Normandy, France and later, after the war, was broughtback to the U.S.A. for burial in Calvary Cemetery in the section reserved for veteran servicemen.
