Epp, the second child of Heinrich H. and Helena PetersEpp, was born on Oct. 12, 1882, on a farm near Henderson, Neb. Hespent most of his life in the Henderson community. He died on Feb. 23,1970, reaching the age of 87 years, four months, and 11 days. On June 1, 1903, following catechetical instruction, Heinrich wasbaptized by Elder P. J. Friesen and accepted as a member of theBethesda Mennonite Church. Heinrich's elementary education was rather limited. Because his fatherneeded his help with fall and spring farm work, he could attend schoolonly from November until the middle of March each year. In his lateteens he was privileged to attend the Bethel College Academy for oneyear. For seven years after his 21st birthday he alternated schoolattendance at Bethel and the University of Nebraska with teaching inhis home community. In 1910, Heinrich was married to Elisabeth Richert and to this unionwere born three children. In the years that followed, he taughtparochial school, served as an assistant minister in the BethesdaChurch, and earned his livelihood by farming. In 1924 the family moved to Lincoln, Neb. where Heinrich completedrequirements at the University for his B. A. and M. A. degrees. Thenthe family moved back to Henderson where he held positions of highschool instructor, high school principal, and superintendent of theschool. In 1936 he retired from teaching and once again returned tofarming. Through the years he has served his community and his church in manypositions. In addition to serving on various committees and boards inthe community and county he also was a member of the GeneralConference Committee on Education, chairman of the Northern DistrictConference, and a member of the Advisory Board of Bethel College. During his later years he spent many hours organizing and catalogingbooks for the Bethesda Church Library. In spite of increasing hearingdifficulties, Heinrich's interest in his family, his church, and hiscommunity remained lively to the end of his days. Since July, he hadresided in the Henderson Nursing Home. His reciting of Scripture,poems, and verses on frequent occasions was a source of cheer to otherresidents of the Home. Surviving are one daughter, Dorothea Helena, and her husband L. PaulHeath of Topeka, Kan.; two sons, Carl H. and wife Margaret Ruth andRobert O. and wife Amelia Amanda, all of Henderson; eightgrandchildren; two sisters, Marie (Mrs. John K. Friesen) and ElisabethEpp, both of Henderson. Preceding him in death were his beloved wife,three sisters and five brothers. Funeral services were conducted at the Bethesda Mennonite Church atHenderson on Feb. 26, 1970. Rev. Walter Dyck and Rev. Abe Krauseofficiated.
