Rempel, Johann D. (1874-1938?) Johann D. Rempel, a Mennonite Brethren minister of Russia, was born on2 November 1874 at Hoffnungsort, Chortitza, South Russia, a son ofDavid Rempel and Anna Thiessen. On 6 January 1898 he was married toKatharina Krahn, and in 1906 moved to Rodichnoye in the newlyestablished Orenburg settlement. In 1910 he was chosen to the ministryof the Mennonite Brethren Church of Klubnikovo. By attending Biblecourses and by private study he acquired an extensive and deepknowledge of the Scriptures. On 2 March 1929 his wife died. In connection with the "peasant flight" to Moscow in 1929 Rempel wasarrested and banished with his son Johann to Archangel, and from thereto the forests of Pechora in the northern Urals. Here he spent 3.5years. His good performance of the assigned work and also his generalpersonality earned for him the respect of his fellow prisoners as wellas of the GPU (State Political Administration) officials, a respectwhich gave him certain privileges easing the imprisonment. In 1933 hewas released and returned home. Since he was not permitted to serve inhis office of preacher and knew that further imprisonment awaited him,he went to the Ukraine, settling as a day laborer in the village ofEinlage near Zaporozhe. Here he secretly served small Mennonitecircles. Soon he was again arrested, but acquitted after animprisonment of seven months. During this time his second wife died.His third wife, the widow Maria Klassen, took him into her home, buthe could not rest long. During the night of 20 July 1938 he wasarrested.
