Leo Twohig, 77, of Westerleigh, a retired mechanic and rigger forConsolidated Edison, died Tuesday at Staten Island University Hospitalin Ocean Breeze. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts, he settled in Westerleigh in 1957. Mr. Twohig worked as a mechanic and rigger for Con Edison on StatenIsland for thirty-nine years. He retired in 1987. He was an avid baseball and basketball fan and player who enjoyedcoaching Little League teams for many years. Mr. Twohig served in the Navy during World War II, as a gunner's mateaboard the liberty ship USS Richard H. Alvey. The Alvey was part of anunescorted supply-ship convoy dispatched from Iceland early in thewar. The slow-moving convoy came under attack from German submarines nearthe Arctic Circle, during a rare and unfortunate spate of relativelygood late-fall weather in the usually stormy area. "We were attacked by a wolfpack of German subs for about five days andfive nights," Mr. Twohig wrote in a log, compiled after the event. The ship survived the onslaught and arrived safely in Murmansk,Russia. Of thirteen cargo ships dispatched to Murmansk in two convoysduring this period without the protection of escorting warships, onlyfive successfully completed the journey. Mr. Twohig was a member of the U.S. Armed Guard, a veterans' groupfrom Brooklyn; the Labetti Post, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, Rosebank;and the Con Edison Retirees Club. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren. Mr. Twohig was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh. Surviving are his wife of fifty-two years, the former Pauline Borek;his two sons, Douglas and Patrick; a brother, James; and fourgrandchildren. The funeral will be held on Saturday from the Matthew Funeral Home,Willowbrook, with a Mass at 9:45 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
