"Jim" Twohig, 92 WWII veteran; teacher, coach,award-winning athlete HYANNIS - James E. "Jim" Twohig of Dennis, Hollywood, Fla., andformerly of Lynn, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008 atCape Cod Hospital. Born in Lynn in 1915, he was the son of the lateEdward James and Julia Belle Twohig. Jim attended schools in Lynn and graduated with honors from LynnClassical High School in 1937, where he was the leading scorer andcaptain for the basketball team his junior and senior years. At Salem Normal School, Jim continued to dominate on the basketballcourt. In his senior year as captain, Jim led his team to the NewEngland Basketball Championship by beating the Division I BostonUniversity team. He was later named to the College All New EnglandTeam. After graduating from Salem in 1937, Jim returned to Lynn Classicalwhere he worked as a teacher and basketball coach from 1940-53. From1955 to 66 Jim continued his career as a teacher and basketball coachat Salem State College. His dedication and loyalty as a coach andplayer are honored annually in the presentation of the James TwohigAward to an outstanding basketball player. In 1986 Jim was inducted into the Salem State College Athletic Hall ofFame because of his athletic accomplishments, integrity, sportsmanshipand character. In 2001 Jim's many contributions to Salem State College as anoutstanding athlete, coach and alumnus were recognized in the namingof the gymnasium at the O'Keefe Center as the James Twohig Gymnasium. During WW II he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy in thePacific. Jim's public service career included the school committee, acouncilor at large and city assessor for Lynn and many years ofservice to the YMCA. Throughout his life Jim remained an avid fan of the Boston Celtics,theRed Sox and the Patriots and every summer he enjoyed the collegebaseball teams in the Cape Cod League. He had a special affection forhorses and watched them race across the country. Since his retirement, Jim traveled as much as he could, alwaysvisiting with friends wherever possible. Jim's extended family grew as he shared his warmth, wit and affectionwith those who surrounded him. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen Salvi and her husband, Walter,his son Kevin Twohig and his wife, Joann, of Andover, his son MarkTwohig of North Carolina, his stepson Dr. Walter Murphy and his wife,Linda, of Plymouth, his stepdaughter Ann Malbon and her husband, Lee,of North Smithfield, R.I., eleven grandchildren and sevengreat-grandchildren, and his companion. Dorothy Tanco of Dennis. He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Twohig, his wife, Frances Murphy,and his daughter, Jane Twohig Perrin. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, 2008 at 10 a.m. atSt. Augustine Church, 43 Essex St,. Andover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Salem State CollegeAthletics c/o Tim Shea, Salem State College, 352 Lafayette St. Salem,MA 01970. Burial will be private.
