Like many descended from Thomas Dow of Newbury, I have been trying to determine the origins of Thomas. Many genealogists have accepted the data summarized in several records attributing Thomas to the same parents as Henry. It makessense superficially because of the ages of the two, Henry baptized 1605,Thomas probably b in 1615, and the proximity of Hampton to Newburyport, andalso because of the English records showing that Henry's parents had twosons named Thomas. The data compiled by R.P. Dow in his "Book of Dow" (the Tuttle Company, Rutland, Vermont) argue strongly against any relationship. Henry's parents were Henry Dow b 1550 and ElizabethMarch m May 12, 1594. They had two children named Thomas the first dying at age 5 days. the second Thomas baptized 1601 or 2, seems to have inherited the land, lived and died in England; it is this Thomas thatis so often thought to be our Thomas of Newbury. Our Thomas probably arrived by a ship of settlers who arrived inNewbury and shared the first division of Newbury, either directly or viaperhaps Ipswich. I have never found any reference to him on a ship list. As for wife Phebe, there seems to be some contention on her surname. The will of Thomas reads..."I Pheby latly wife to Thomas Dow doe joyne my consent etc..." from which one may infer the name Latly or on theother hand Pheby, lately wife of Thomas. In any case I can find no record of her origins, or am I willing to consider her maiden surname to beLatly. By the way I have a copy of the R.P. Dow book and would be happy to doany lookups that you might need. Source: Book of Dow Thomas Dow, an original grantee of Newbury MA in 1639; Source: http://members.tripod.com/Tere_4/thebook.htm The Dow country of origin: The library gives 3 possible origins: Wales,England,Ireland. The Book of Dow traces Henry and Thomas, both of whom were fromNorfolk, England or the surrounding area. There is no proof that theywere related. =========================================================================== The name "Dow " is considered by some to mean "son of David" InScottish Folklore the Dow name is connected being descendents of King David butmore probably admirers of his leadership abilities and moral values. It isalso said that the name was derived from "Dove" which appeared as the HolySpirit when Jesus was baptised by John. The spelling has been Doue, Dove,Dowe & Dow. Scottish Dows invaded Ireland in large numbers. Thus explaininghow the Dow clan got to Ireland I am sure we are all mixed some how! =========================================================================== Source: posted to GenForum by Florence Thurber Gargaro Dow surname as been long assoicaied with Dove, Duv, of LeDuv. Thereare records of a Richard Le Duv and a Nicholas le Duv in England ca.1200. The origin is thought to be "dove" - a name used for people withgentle demeanor. The same occurred in Italy. Christopher Columbus wasa "dove" - (colombo is It. for dove). Spelling variations seemed to solidify within an area - with it beingDowe in Norfolk. In Hants it was Doue. It is a common name in Norfolk- and is pronounced witha longer "o" there. The common pronuncuationin America (rhymes with cow) is a result of yankee twang. The earliestspelling as Dow is 1505, in England. Henry Dow of MA Bay Colonyactually used Dowe, Dove, and Dow! There is also the name Dhu - butthat is the Daw family of Scotland - not Dow. ============================================================================== Source: posted to GenForum by Richard Alan Dow I've heard theories that "Dow" came from "dhu" (or "dubh"), which isGaelic for "black". It could also be from the same root as endow ordowager, meaning "gift", and a closely associated name is Dove, whichis also associated with gift. It's possible that different familiescould trace the name to different sources. ============================================================================= Source: http://members.tripod.com/Tere_4/thebook.htm There is, as with Henry, a great deal of information printed in theBook of Dow on Thomas of Newbury. The following is the condensedversion: In the list of original grantees of Newbury, Mass. 1639 occurs thename of Thomas Dow. The origin of Newbury is strangely absent from therecords. Nothing is known of the vessel which carried them; none ofthem appear on lists or in other places. Thomas Dow was a freeholderfrom his arrival by reason of the original grant of his Newburyhomestead. He continued a freeholder when he sold this & bought landin Haverhill. * freeholder : one who by grant, purchase or inheritancewas entitled to a share of the "commons" or undivided lands. * Without going into every detail, we can state here that and extensivesearch by amateur and professional geanealogists was done in order tofind the origin of Thomas of Newbury and his wife Phoebe. Reasonsgiven by the Book of Dow as to why this Thomas could not be the olderbrother of Henry are as follows: Henry Dow had a more than averageeducation, Thomas could not read. Thomas not able to read. Thomas wasmuch poorer than his neighbors, and he didn't have enough food for hischildren. For 5 years they lived within 15 miles of each other withoutthe slightest indication that even knew each other. That paidinvestigators scoured the counties of England for every record ofevery Thomas Dow (with varied spellings of Dow) they could find andyet none of these fit this Thomas. As of this time there has been noproof as to the origin of Thomas Dow of Newbury. Thomas was the first white adult to die in Haverhill. May 31, 1654 "aeabout 39". His will made 2 days before his death: " The last will andtestament of Thomas Dowe as it was delevered or expressed by him onthe 29th day of May being in ye yeare 1654. And an effoert was made to claim her name as Fenn since hermark resembled an F. That these are both assumptions or guesses issurely the case. We have no proof of her maiden name. Children of Thomas and Phoebe: a. John a minor in 1654 - b later than 1633, presumably in Europe, notimprobably 1638. b. Thomas probably b 1640 in Newbury c. Stephen b Newbury Mch 29, 1642 d. Mary b Apr 16 1644 e. Martha b June 1 1648 It should be noted that John did indeed make all the payments requiredof him in his fathers will. An Phoebe married John Eaton, witness tothe will. =========================================================================== Christening: 16 JAN 1602, Runham, Yarmouth, Norfolk, England Emigrated to America, abt. 1635 =========================================================================== Note: Will probated 8 (2) 1656 Thomas Dow in his will names his wife as Pheby. Phebya P Dow made hermark in court papers regarding her late husband's will. Essex County Probate Files, Docket 8, 235 David W. Hoyt: "(IV) Thomas (2), son of Henry Dow, was the immigrant ancestor of thisbranch. He was an early settler of Newbury, Massachusetts, and wasadmitted a freeman June 22, 1642. He bought a house and land there in1648. Later he removed to Haverhill, where he died May 31, 1654. Hisnuncupative will was dated May 29, 1654, and proved February 2, 1656.He married Phebe, who married (second) John Eaton, of Haverhill,November 20, 1661." Ezra S. Stearns: "Thomas Dow, an early settler of Newbury, Massachusetts came fromTylner[sic], England. He moved to Haverhill and died there May 31,1654, aged 39 years, leaving a widow, Phoebe, who later married JohnEaton of Haverhill." Charles H. Pope: "Thomas Dow, Newbury, freeman June 22, 1642, he bought land and ahouse in 1648. Wife Phebe; children recorded at Newbury... died 31 May1654. Will dated 29 May 1654, probated August 3, 1656, bequeathed towife Phebe, sons John, Thomas, Stephen, daughters Mary and Martha, all[except the wife, I assume] under 21 years." My line descends two ways from Thomas and Phoebe Dow - through boththeir third child, Stephen (who married first Ann Storie), and theirfifth child, Martha (who married Joseph Heath).
