According to Farrington and Kirk Family, by Herschel B. Rochelle,"Joseph Kirk was a Revolutionary War Soldier, listed in the musterroll of West Nottingham Company of Chester County Militia (Penna),commanded by Capt. Ephriam Blackburn. This was the 3rd Co, 2nd Bn., commanded by Col Evan Evans. Roll dated 24 April 1778. (Penna.archives, Series 2, Vol 14--Penna in War of Revolution, 1775-1783, p.99) Two of Joseph's cousins appear on the same roll--Timothy andRoger, sons of Timothy. Roger became a Captain, had mills and land andwas in the state Legislature." This seems odd in light of the fact that Joseph was granted acertificate of removal to Westland by Nottingham Friends in 1787. Thecertificate states, "On inquiry we do not find but their lives andconversation has been in a good degree orderly . . ." Would thepeaceable Friends have said this about a former soldier? In fact, muster rolls include many names of men who never weresoldiers. They are censuses of men of eligible age in an area ratherthan rosters of enlistees. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=kirk-stubbs&id=I0124: Joseph and Judith removed to western Pennsylvania and located in whatwas known as the "Redstone Settlement", now [1872] Redstone township,Fayette County. He resided here for many years but died in Bloomfieldtownship. He was chiefly engaged in agricultural pursuits.
