Notizen zu dieser Person
The following account, by Dorothy (Smith) Schofield, appears on page214 of The History of Morgan County, Ohio, 1980. The first history of Morgan County mentioned mygreat-great-grandfather, David Smith, coming from Belmont County toMorgan County about 1830, and locating near the present site ofChesterhill. He was instrumental in helping found the village whichwas then called Chesterfield. When it was time for a post office thatname had been taken, so the village became Chesterhill (it stands on ahill). The Society of Friends still retains this name as ChesterfieldFriends Meeting. On the following page, in an article by Francis Smith Anderson, it isstated that David Smith was the first settler in Marion township. David Smith and Judith Kirk were married under the care of theRedstone meeting in 1799. They moved to the Stillwaterneighborhood inBelmont County, Ohio, in 1806, and were later among the early settlersof Morgan County, Ohio, where this line of Smiths were members ofPennsville and Chesterfield meetings still when Irving Smith was born.
