But the Scots soon began to rebel against Edward. In1300heinvadedGalloway, one of the centres of resistance, andCaerlaverockwasone ofthe prime targets for his wrath. The siege ofCaerlaverock isoneof themost well known incidents of this time because ofadetailedwrittenaccount by a member of the besieging army.

Edward of England came with 87 knights and 3000 men. Siegeenginesweresentfor from the castles of Lochmaben, Carlisle,Roxburgh,JedburghandSkinburness. The siege didnt last long and LordMaxwellsgarrison of60men soon surrendered. Some were hanged from thecastle wallsand therestwere allowed to walk free. The castle remained inEnglishhandsuntil1312.

The keeper of the castle was none other thanSirEustaceMaxwell,demonstrating the borderer's remarkable ability tomakethe mostfromboth sides. In 1312 he declared for Robert Bruce, KingofScots. Hewasbesieged in the castle but held out. Robert I granted himacharterofannual rent for demolishing the castle in line withRobertBrucespolicyof destroying all stronghold that could be used byaninvadingforce.

The accession of David II to the Scottish throne in 1329andthere-openingof hostilities between Scotland and England was a signforSirEustace tochange his allegiances once again. The Maxwells wereloyaltothe Balliolsand not to the Bruces and when in 1332, EdwardBalliolwascrowned King ofScots at Scone Sir Eustace repairedandgarrisonedCaerlaverock and placedit at Balliols disposal.
