Eleanor (Eleanora) Plantaganet of Castile, born in 1162,diedin1214,promised initially by her father to marry Frenchroyalty,buteventuallymarried Afonso VIII. of Castile., King ofCastile(1158-1214).He was theson of Sancho III., the Desired, King ofCastile(1157-1158).See thislineage in the Kings of Spain Line in VolumeI.Eleanor andAfonso VIII.had the following children (Note: Somedifferencesare seenbetween thislist and the one in the Kings of SpainLine):
1. Sancho of Castile.
2. Bergenuela (Berengaria) of Castile, married Afonso IX, KingofLeon.Theyhad a son, Ferdinand III, who married Joanna Dammartin.Seethecontinuationof this lineage in the Spanish Kings Line of Volume I.
3. Uracca of Castile, had been promised to Louis VIII., theheirofFrance,but eventually married Afonso II. the Fat, KingofPortugal,1211-1223. Shewas rejected by the French because of herunusualname.Her younger sister,Blanche was deemed to be more suitable fortheFrenchtastes.
4. Blanche of Castile, born on March 4, 1188, in the palaceofPlacentia,inCastile, where she spent most of her childhoodyears,married on May23,1200, Louis VIII. of France., prince and heir ofFranceandeventually Kingof France. Blanche received as her dowry, thetownofEvreux with itssurrounding land, always a bone ofcontentionbetweenFrance and England,but nevertheless given to her byherfather-in-law,King Philip.
