James Hamilton Was granted a charter in 1441 of the lands ofRaplochbyhiscousin. He was succeeded by his son William William 2ndofRaplochwhomarried Margaret Bailie, daughter of the LairdofLamington.Hisdescendant, Gavin Hamilton, 9th of Raploch, granted tohisson Claudthelands of Bornis and Culbowie.

He was granted a charter by his cousin James Hamilton, lordofCadzowandlater 1st lord Hamilton, on 20th May 1441 for 'all and wholeofthelandsof Raploche' and this was 'for his faithful service done, andtobedoneduring his whole life. Raploch is in the Barony ofMachan,whichiswithin the Sheriffdom of Lanark. The charter was madeatBothwellcastleand witnessed by John of Hamilton, Gavin ofHamilton,thegranter'sbrothers, Arthur of Hamilton, William Balze,AlexanderofHamilton andThomas of Hamilton of Nelysland. The charter itself survives and is (was?) in the privatemuniments oftheduke sofHamilton; Isle of Arran papers (National registerofArchivesSurvey, No.2177 - bundle 511). It is published in HMC11threport, partvi (duke ofHamilton), p. 213. - all ex inform Mrs Diane Baptie.

The full text is:

'132. Charter by Sir James of Hamyltoun, knight, lord ofCadzow,grantingtohis kinsman or cousin James of Hamyltoun, son of thelateWalterofHamyltoun, for his faithful service done, and to be doneduringhiswholelife, to the granter, all and whole the landsofRoplache[Raploch]within the pertinents, in the barony of Machan,withinthesheriffdom ofLanark; to be holden to James of Hamyltoun for allthetimeof his life,of the granter and his heirs, withoug anydrawback,freelyand quietly.No reddendo is stated. Clause of warrandice inusualform.Given at theCastle of Bothwell, 20 May 1441; witnesses, JohnofHamyltounand Gawinof Hamyltoun, the Granter's brothers, ArthurofHamyltoun,William Balze,Alexander of Hamyltoun and Thomas ofHamyltounofNelysland.
