Laird of Yester ; Sheriff of PeeblesshireorTweeddale.Commissionerappointed to treat with the English. April27,1409, Givensafe-conductto England on 5 occasions. 1420, FoundedtheCollegiateChurch of Yester.

' .. was Sheriff of Peeblesshire. He married Jean orJoanna, eldestdaughterof Sir Hugh Giffard of Yester, the head of an oldfamilywhichsettled inScotland in the reign of David I, and obtainedfromthatmonarch lands inEast Lothian. William the Lion conferred uponhimthebarony of Yester. Inthe course of time the parish which borethatnamecame to be popularlycalled Giffard. His grandson, Hugh Giffard, wasoneof the guardians ofAlexander III and his queen. He was regardedasaskillful magician, andseveral anecdotes are told of his magicalart, andhis control over demonsand the powers of nature. Fordun mentionsthatinGiffard's castle there wasa capacious cavern, said to havebeenformedby magical art, and called inthe country, 'Bo-Hall,' thatis,HobgoblinHall. Sir David Dalrymple, in his'Annals,' says, 'A stairoftwenty-foursteps led down to this apartment, which is a largeandspacious hall, with an arched roof; and though it hasstood formanycenturies, and beenexposed to the external air for a periodof fiftyorsixty years, it isstill as firm and entire as if it had onlystood afewyears. >From thefloor of this hall another stair ofthirty-sixstepsleads down to a pit, which hath a communication with Hope'sWater.'Thisancient and strongcastle, which stands on an elevatedpeninsula, nearthejunction of twostreams, has long been in ruins, thoughthe GoblinHallwas tenanted bythe Marquis of Tweeddale's falconer so lateas 1737.SirHugh'sappearance and dress are vividly described by Sir WalterScottinthethird canto of 'Marmion;' and of the hall he says -- ' 'Oflofty roof and ample size, Beneath the castle deep it lies; To hew theliving rock profound, The floor to pave, the arch to round, There nevertoiled a mortal arm; It all was wrought by word and charm.'

'Sir Hugh Giffard's heiress brought the barony of YesterintotheTweeddalefamily, and they quartered the arms of Giffard withtheirown. 'The Church of Yester, of which Sir William obtainedthepatronagealongwith the estate, was originally called St. Bathan's.Itwasconverted byhim into a cllegiate establishment for aprovost, sixprebendaries, andtwo choristers; and in this state itcontinued untiltheReformation. 'Though the Hays were henceforthdesignated as of Yester, theystillcontinued to reside at Neidpath Castle,on the banks of theTweed, nearPeebles. In all probability the newer partof that castle wasbuiltbySir William in the early part of the fifteenthcentury. For thesakeofsecurity the walls of the new structure were madeenormouslythickandstrong; but a serious mistake was committed in amilitary pointofview,in allowing teh old castle to remain, for its wallsweregreatlyinferiorin strength and thickness to those of the new partofthefortress, andthe old part consequently formed its vulnerable partassoonas artillerycame into use. 'Sir William took for his second wife,Alice, daughter of SirThomasHay,of Errol, and had issue by both wives. The first bore to himthreesonsand three daughters, the second a son and adaughter. Theeldestson,William, predeceased him; the second son, Thomas, was one ofthehostagesfor James I in 1423, when his income was estimatedat sixhundredmarksyearly. He survived his father only four years, anddiedunmarriedin1432. He was succeeded by his brother, David ...' TheGreat Historic Families of Scotland, James Taylor
