William, who assumed, from what reason is unascertained,thesurnameofAlbini, and was known as 'William de Albini,Brito,'incontradistinctionto another great Baron, 'William deAlbini,Pincerna,'from whom theEarls of Arundel descended. William deAlbini,Brito, Lordof Belvoir, inthe Chapter House of St. Albans,confirmed allthe grantsof his fatherand mother to the Church of Our Ladyat Belvoir,desiringthat he mightbe admitted in the fraternity as thosehis parentshad been.This feudallord acquired great renown at thecelebrated battleofTinchebray, inNormandy, where, commanding the horse,he charged theenemywith so muchspirit that he determine at once the fateof the day. Oftheexploit,Matthew Paris says, 'In this encounter chieflydeservethhonourthe mostheroic William de Albini, the Briton, who, withhis sword,brokethroughthe enemy, and terminated the battle.'
