William de Albini, feudal Lord of Belvoir, in the 6th ofRichardI[1195],was with that monarch in the army in Normandy, and thenextyearwassheriff of the counties of Warwick and Leicester, ashewassubsequentlyof Rutlandshire. In the 2nd of King John [1201],hehadspecial license tomake a park at Stoke, in Northampton, andlibertytohunt the fox and hare(it lying within the royal forestofRockingham).Afterwards, however, hetook up arms with the otherbaronsand, leavingBelvoir well fortified, heassumed the governorshipofRochester Castle,which he held out for threemonths against theRoyalists,and ultimatelyonly surrendered when reducedto the last state offamine.Upon thesurrender of Rochester, WilliamAlbini was sent prisoner toCorfeCastle,and there detained until hisfreedom became one of theconditionsuponwhich Belvoir capitulated, anduntil he paid a ransom of6,000 marks.Inthe reign of Henry III, we findhim upon the other side andaprincipalcommander at the battle ofLincoln, anno 1217, wherehisformerassociates sustained so signal adefeat. This stout baron, whohadbeenone of the celebrated twenty-fiveappointed to enforce theobservanceofMagna Carta, m. 1st, Margery, dau.of Odonel de Umfraville, bywhomhehad had issue, William, Sir Odinel,Robert, and Nicholas,rectorofBottesford.
