Claud Hamilton (1st Lord Paisley) 1543 - 1621
Politician and Commendator of Paisley Abbey. Born atHamilton,thefourthson of James Hamilton (1516-75), 2nd Earl of Arranand1stDukeChâtelherault and younger brother of the 3rd Earl of Arran.
Hamilton was known as an unscrupulous schemer and supporterofMary,Queenof Scots, who plotted for foreign intervention inherfavour.Having beenappointed Commendator of Paisley Abbey at a youngage,hefell heir to theextensive land-holdings of the abbeyfollowingtheReformation. These wereerected into a Temporal Lordship andHamiltonwascreated the 1st BaronPaisley in 1587. In 1574, he marriedMargaretSetonat Niddry Castle (WestLothian) and their son became the 1stEarlofAbercorn.
He was buried at Paisley Abbey.
