Born: circa 1103 in Louvain, Leeuwen, Brabant, Belgium,daughterofGodefroyI, Duke de Lorraine and Ide de Namur. Married on 29Jan1121:Henry I, Kingof England, son of Guillaume, Duke deNormandieandMathilde-Maud deFlandre. Adelaide was Henri Ius second wifeand hewasher first husband. At15 years of age, she therefore marriedthis50-yearold widower. Perhapsunderstandably, her true passion was saidtobeneedlework. Married before1128: Guillaume duAubigny, sonofWilliamduAubigny and Cecily Bigod(source- a pedigree purchasedatArundelCastle). Married before 1149:Gilbert de Ville. It isunclearwhetherGilbert was Adelaideus second orthird husband. Somesourcesindicate shebore her second husband some 7children, and his namewasAlbini. Died:on 23 Apr 1151 in Afflighem,Flandre, Belgium. Adelaidewas48 years ofage when she died. Some sourcesindicate Adeliza deLouvain,who was thewidow of Henri I and marriedGuillaume duAubigny/deAlbini,died in 1176.
In hopes of further legitimate issue King Henry married againafterthelossof his only son William. His bride, whose age is uncertainbutwhowascertainly younger than his daughter Matilda, wasAdeliza,thedaughter ofGodfrey the Bearded, Duke of Lower Lorraine,MarquessofAntwerp, and Countof Louvain. The marriage took place atWindsor on29January 1122. Thecoronation of the new Queen at Westminster Abbey on 3February1122gaverise to an amusing incident. The King, wearing hiscrown, hadtakenhis seaton the throne to await his consortus crowningwhen theagedArchbishop RalphduEscures, verging on senility, entered.Seeing theKinghe flew into arage, thinking that his right to place thecrown onthesovereignus head hadbeen infringed. He at once snatched thecrownfromthe Kingus head (oneversion has it that he knocked it offwithhispastoral staff) and insistedon reimposing it with his ownhands.Henryussecond marriage remainedchildless; the once potent sireofmanyillegitimate children was potent nolonger. In 1138 the young widowed Queen married William duAubigny,1stEarlofArundel, to whom she bore a large family before, weariedbymarriedlife,she retired to the convent of Afflighem in Flanders,whereshe diedandwas buried in March or April 1151.
