COLIN, the grandson of Lord Campbell, was created EARL OFARGYLLbyJamesII., in 1457. By his marriage to the eldest of thethreedaughtersandco-heiresses of John, Lord Lorne (all threemarriedCampbells), theyoungEarl put an end to the feuds which for upwardsof twohundred andfiftyyears had raged between the families of Lochaw andLorne, andobtainedthe undisputed chieftainship of the county ofArgyll.Heacquired, inconsequence of this connection, the lordship andtitleofLorne fromWalter Stewart, Lord Lorne and Invermeath, heir maleofthatlordship, inexchange for the estates of Kildoning, Baldoning, andotherlands in theshires of Perth, Fife, Kinross, and Aberdeen.Thegalleyvtheancientbadge of the family of Lornev was, in consequenceofthisacquisition, assumed into the Earlus hereditarycoat-of-arms.tTheacquisition ofLorne,u says Dr. Fraser, twas a favourablearrangementforthe family ofArgyll, as it lay adjacent to their otherlands, whiletheLowlandpossessions surrendered as an equivalent werescatteredovervariouscounties and far distant from their moreimportantterritories.uThe Earlacquired extensive estates besides inPerthshire andFifeshire, and thelordship of Campbell, with its celebratedcastle nearDollar, where JohnKnox visited Archibald, fourth Earl ofArgyll, andpreached tohim andhis relatives. It continued to be a frequentresidenceof thefamilyuntil 1644, when it was burned by the Macleans inthe army oftheMarquisof Montrose. At a later period he obtained a largeshare oftheforfeitedpossessions of the Lord of the Isles. The mostimportantofficesat Courtand in the kingdom were conferred upon him. Hewasfrequentlysent asambassador to the English Court, and also to France.Hewas Masterof theRoyal Household, Grand Justiciary of Scotland, andeventuallybecame LordHigh Chancellorvan office which he held for alongperiod. This dignity, along with the lands of tMekell andLettelPincartoun,u inthe barony ofDunbar, was probably bestowed upon theEarlin 1483, as areward for hisloyal adherence to James III. at the timeofthe conspiracyof ArchibaldBell-the-Cat and other nobles, which led tothemurder of theroyalfavourites at Lauder, in 1482. Argyll was in Englandatthe time ofthedefeat and death of that unfortunate monarchatSauchieburn, in 1488.Onhis return to Scotland he was at oncereappointedChancellor byJamesIV., who also conferred upon him the landsofRoseneath,Dumbartonshire(January 9th, 1489) which are still inthepossession ofthe family. Themansion is one of the principal seats oftheDuke ofArgyll. Thispowerful and prosperous nobleman died in 1493.TheLords ofthe Isles, the mightiest of all the ancient Highlandchieftains, had longpossessedunquestioned supremacy in the Hebrides andthroughoutthemountaincountry of Argyllshire and Inverness-shire. But fromthisperiodtheirpower began to wane before the rising influence oftheCampbells. Aslateas the fifteenth century these haughty andturbulentislandchieftainseven disputed the authority of the kings ofScotland;buttheirsuccessive rebellions were punished by successiveforfeituresbothoftheir ancient dignities and their possessions, and nowthat thehouseofArgyll had become sufficiently powerful to enforce thedecreesoftheKing and Parliament, and had a strong interest incarryingthesedecreesinto effect, the extensive territories which formanygenerationshadbelonged to the Lordship of the Isles were finallywrestedfromtheirancient possessors and conferred upon the loyalclans, andespeciallyupon the Campbells, who could now meet in thefieldthecombined forcesof all the other Western septs
