John McIlvaine descends from the McIlvainesofAyrshire,Scotland;hereditary Lairds of Grimmet. The Grimmet estateswereheld byMcIlvane'sup until the 1720's. Ther weretraditionallyPresbyterian,which mayexplain why several ScottishMcIlvaine's emigratedto Irelandand then onto the American Colonies.

May 3, 1687. They emigrated with John's nephew, Joseph, andtheClarkandthe Orr families, to Ireland in 1693. (Frank C. McElvainnamesthisdate,but Samuel McElvain says that it was 1697). TheysettledinBallykeel,Islandmagee, County Antrim. Three children borninAyrshiremoved withthem; James, Thomas, and Margaret. Three sons wereborninIreland;Andrew, George, and Robert. John McIlvane does not seemtohaveowned anyland, but had a lease of six acres near the footofMuldersleyHill andnot far from the present Ballymacarry station onthenorthernrailwayrunning from Belfast to Larne on the opposite shoreofLarneLough. He isburied there and his stone reads 'here lyeth the bodyofJohnMcIlwain,who died Sept. 7, 1735 Aged 79'

Thomas stayed in Ireland and his daughter was Janet.Herheadstoneispictured in the book 'Gravestone Inscriptions, CouontyAntrim,Vol.1,Islandmagee'. It has the Kein Crest and Arms andtheinscription'herelyeth the body of Martha Kein who died May 11th,1752aged 5years.AlsoJames Kein's wife Janet Mcliwain who died May 22d1774aged 56years.Also James Kein who departed this life 30th Novr 1793aged80years'.

The above mentioned stone for John McIlvane is no longerinthelittlecemetery in the corner of the 6 acre field. The burialswereinthesouthwest corner, and at one time a small church stoodthere.Thestoneof Marth Kein, however is still there, and also thatofJanetMcIlwaineKein and from their position. The grave of JohnMcIlwaneisprobablyunder the edge of the foundation stones of the Churchandhisstone wasmoved to make way for the building. The stone does notappearintheCemetery.

Three children born inAyrshire,James, ThomasandMargaret came with them and three sons were borninIreland:Andrew,George and Robert. John leased six acres nearMuldersleyHillnearBallymacarry station.

He was buried in a little cemetery in the corner of the sixacrefiled.Hisgranddaughter Janet's gravestone is pictured inabook'GravestoneInscriptions, County Antrim, Vol 1, Islandmagee'
