Born in 989 and succeeded his father in April 1016. In thisyearhefoughtsix battles, but through treachery he wascompletelyoverthrownatAssandun, in Essex. He and Canute the Dane agreedto dividethekingdom.He was chosen king of England by the Londoners onhisfather'sdeath,April, 1016, while Canute was elected at Southampton bytheWitan.Edmundhastily levied an army in the west, defeated Canutetwice,raisedthesiege of London, and again routed the Danes. Levying afresharmy,hedefeated them at Otford, his last victory. At Ashingdon inEssex,afteradesperate fight, he was routed. By compromise withCanute,thelatterretained Mercia and Northumbria, Edmund all the southandtheheadship,the survivor to succeed to the whole. A few weekslaterEdmunddied, in1016, and Canute became King of England without arival. Itissaid thatthe traitorous Edric Streona perhaps murdered EdmundonNovember30,1016, shortly after peace was made. Edmund II.marriedEalgyth(Algitha),widow of Sigefrith the Dane. She died in 1014.
