Alfred, the Great (871-900 AD)
Youngest son of King Æthelwulf, Alfred became King of Wessexduringatimeof constant Viking attack. He was driven into hiding by aVikingraidintoWessex, led by the Dane, Guthorm, and took refuge intheAthelneymarshesin Somerset. There, he recovered sufficient strengthtobe able todefeatthe Danes decisively at the Battle of Eddington. Asacondition ofthepeace treaty which followed, Guthorm receivedChristianbaptismandwithdrew his forces from Wessex, with AlfredrecognizingtheDanishcontrol over East Anglia and parts of Mercia. ThispartitionofEngland,called the 'Danelaw', was formalized by another treatyin 886. Alfred created a series of fortifications to surroundhiskingdomandprovide needed security from invasion. The Anglo-Saxonwordfortheseforts, 'burhs', has come down to us in thecommonplace-namesuffix,'bury.' He also constructed a fleet of ships toaugmenthisotherdefenses, and in so doing became known as the 'FatheroftheEnglishNavy.' The reign of Alfred was known for morethanmilitarysuccess. Hewas a codifier of law, a promoter of education andasuppor|erof thearts. He, himself, was a scholar and translatedLatinbooks intotheAnglo-Saxon tongue. The definitive contemporary workonAlfred's lifeisan unfinished account in Latin by Asser, aWelshman,bishop ofSherbourneand Alfred's counsellor. After his death, hewasburied in hiscapitalcity of Winchester, and is the only Englishmonarchin history tocarrythe title, 'the Great.'
