The Sinclairs were invariably unlucky in theirmilitaryexpeditionsbeyondthe county. Their invasion of Orkney in 1529 wasanotherdisaster.John,4th Earl, set out to aid William, Lord Sinclairwhosefamily heldtheCrown lands of Orkney and Shetland, and who had beendrivenout byastrong faction headed by Sinclair of Sanday. Earl John,with500men,landed at Orphir on the shore of Scapa Flow and mettheOrkneymenatSummerdale near Stromness. He and his men were slain,manybeingstonedto death by the islanders as they tried to hide amongtherocks ontheshore.
Killed at the Battle of Somersdale.
