Hij was voor de tweede wereldoorlog wijnhandelaar in Hildesheim (Harz, Duitsland). Hij heeft voor het huwelijk van mijn grootmoeder Hugenholtz-Lehmkuhl enkele dozen wijn gestuurd. Toen hij in 1934 op grove wijze gediscrimineerd werd, heeft hij de betreffende nazi neergeslagen. Dit werd uiteraard niet in dank afgenomen. Dit werd uiteindelijk de directe aanleiding om naar Israel te vluchten. In Israel was hij eigenaar van het Sharon Hotel in Tel Aviv. Zijn ervaringen waren zo positief dat in 1935 zijn ouders en vier van zijn broers ook naar Israel vertrokken. Zijn broer Erwin met zijn gezin bleef achter en vertrok naar Nederland.
