data from Duane Alphs 3/20 Carole Baker 2/9/07I did some research on the origins of the Aalfs' family . I re-visited my notes from my conversation with Aalf Eben's great-granddaughter, Doris Hempen. She told me that her grandfather, John Jacob, was born in Petkum, Lower Saxony, Germany. The info I had that had him being born in Rethen, Prussia is much less reliable and there was no source for that info other than the LDS International Genealogical Index. It noted in that source that there was no source for their info. Someone just turned it in. Anyway, I have changed John Jacob's birth place. Another person also submitted the Petkum, Germany birthplace to Ancestry.com. John Jacob's wife, Detje, was born in Ditzum (NOT Ditzun), Germany. Ditzum is across the Ems River from Petkum. This makes complete sense, then, that Petkum was John Jacob's birthplace. I have a feeling that the Aalfs name is Dutch and that perhaps the family originated from Holland. The spelling of Aalfs has been seen in other families in Holland
