John J Schroder Pioneer Resident Dies Here Thursday
Lived in Sod House Southeast of Sibley In Early Eighties = John Schroder,
88, pioneer Osceola county resident, died Thursday at his home near Sibley. Funeral service wee held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the First Methodist Church in Sibley, with the Rev. J
.S. Hutchings of Melvin officiating. Burial was in Sibley Cemetery. John J son of Henry and Elizabeth Schroder, was born at Logansville, Wisc. June 27, 1868. He passedaway Oct 11
, 1956, at his home, at the age of 88 years, three months and 14 days. At the age of 5 years he moved to Osceola county with his parents and they settled on a prairie section of land, 6 miles
east and three miles south of Sibley. The first house the family lived in was built of sod. The winters that followed were so severe that these pioneer's longed for thecalm and bet
ter known surrounding of Wisc. However the pioneer spirit prevailed and they were soon very much at home and ready to bear their full share in building this newly settled community. The year
of 1893 he joined the Evangelical Church at Allendorf. On April 22, 1896, he was united in marriage of Hannah E. Gontjes of Sibley and they started to make their family home on thefarm two m
iles east of the present home. Here he and his faithful and devoted wife homestead to reside. he leaves to mourn his passing: his wife and nine children, 3 (8) grand children, twobrothers and
one sister.
The children are: Henry of Melvin, Leonard of Ocheyedan, Delbert of Sibley, Vernon of Sheldon Galdys (Mrs. Millard Morfitt), Dorothy (Mrs. Russell Sturgis), Nellie (Mrs. Albert L
inneman) of Ocheyedan and Evelyn (Mrs Joe Agena) of Sibley and one daughter, Goldie preceded him in death in 1941. His brother; Edward H of Lincoln, Nebr. and Frank B of Chicago,Ill and sist
er Mrs. Minnie Butler of Seattle, Wash. His parents, one sister Anna and a brother, William preceded him in death. He was a loving outstanding quality of sincerity. Last Apr
il 22nd, marked his 60th wedding anniversary. The news of Grandpa Schroder's death bought sadness to many hearts both young and old. All thirty eight grandchildren have been privileged to
enjoy his relationship for many years.
