Born near York, PA.
Son of the immigrant Yost Harbaugh a/k/a Joost Herbach (born in Europe between 1685 and 1705) and Maria Margretha Klein who resided in Maxatawny Township, York Co., PA.
Siblings: Johan George (1726-1787), Ludwig (1727-1809), Jacob (1730-1818), Henry (1740-1779), and Captain Yost Harbaugh (1741-1779).

Originally buried in the German Reform Graveyard, Beaver St., York, PA. According to the librarian at the York County Historical Society, in the 1870s, this graveyard became overflowing and was to beused for other purposes. All of the remains were transferred to Prospect Hill Cemetery at that time, though unfortunately many of the headstones went missing in the process. The City encouraged familymembers to take charge of moving the remains, thus many of the relocated graves are in family clusters.
