The birth and christening dates (and the parentage) of Bernhard Marx included herein comes from the LDS Family Search database. However, there is nothing to document that the Bernhard Marx included in that database is the same Bernhard Marx who married Anna Florentine Potthast. I have chosen to include these facts because the birthdate is approximate to other information, and the birthplace is Driburg, Westphalia which is in close proximity to Borgholz. However, there are other people named Bernhard Marx born around the same time. -- The World Family Tree found on Ancestry.com includes information about a Bernhard Marx, born about 1864. He was one of twelve children. His father was Nicholas Marx, born September 26, 1830 in Prussia; died May 13, 1898 in Harrison, Calumet, WI. His mother was named Anna. This could be the father if Bernhard Marx (or Bernhard himself), although the residency in Wisconsin doesn’t correlate with what we know of Bernard and Anna Florentine (Potthast) Marx … there is no record of them ever living in the USA. -- The LDS Family Search database includes a Bernhard Marx, born Dec 7, 1853 in Muelheim Rhein, Rheinland, Preussen. The location is fairly distant from Borgholz, and it seems unlikely that this Bernhard Marx is related to the husband of Anna Florentine Potthast Marx. Among the possessions of my grandparents, Theodore and Maria (Schenke) Potthast, were three postcards featuring a "Restaurant Marx" in Barmen, Germany. One of the postcards was signed by Albert and Else (Marx) Bauer -- the daughter of Bernard Marx and Anna Florentine Potthast. I believe that this restaurant was family owned by Bernhard Marx and, by extension, Anna Florentine (Potthast) Marx. Curiously, one of the most famous citizens of Barmen was Frederick Engels (born November 28, 1820 in Barmen). Engels was one of two authors of "The Communist Manifesto;" the other author was Karl Marx. A familiial relationship between Karl Marx and Bernhard Marx is certainly possible, but I have not been able to determine any familial connection.
