ELKHART -- Robert P. Fitzsimmons, 66, of Elkhart, died at 10:47 a.m. Thursday (Sept. 10, 2009) in Elkhart General Hospital. He was born July 21, 1943, in Elkhart to Robert L. and Grace (Urmey) Fitzsimmons. He married Janet S. Housour on Feb. 14, 1981, in Elkhart. She survives along with one daughter, Tammy (Terry) Fry of LaGrange; one son, Robert H. (Cynthia) Fitzsimmons of Sturgis, Mich.; three stepsons, Robert (Kathy) Whitmyer of Duluth, Minn., Michael (Lori) Whitmyer of Arvada, Colo., and Jeffrey (Janis) Whitmyer of Reno, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death. Mr. Fitzsimmons was a sales manager in the RV industry for many years. He retired after owning Trailerama, Elkhart, for eight years. He was a huge sports fan, especially Notre Dame. He graduated from Elkhart High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam era. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, 1531 Cobblestone Blvd., Elkhart, where services will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Coy Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, where the DAV Chapter 19 will conduct military graveside honors.
