John George came to the U.S. from Baden, Germany. He came to New Hamburg in 1845. On 9-28-1846 he married Clara Bullinger, who died in 1860. In the 1870 and 1880 census Nicholas Pobst was living with them. From the Biographical and Industrial Edition of “The Scott County Missouri Newsboy”, Vol. XIII, Benton, Mo., April 20, 1900, No.11, Page 17 George Metz George was born in Germany, August 15, 1823, and immigrated with his parents to the United States during infancy, first settling in the state of Ohio. In 1846 he came to Scott County, taking up his residence on a farm two miles from Oran. He followed the occupation of farming more or less of the time until 1891, when he became a merchant, forming a partnership with the firm name of Friend & Metz. Their stock consisted of general merchandise and the firm existed until two years later, when it was dissolved. Mr. Metz then went into the grocery line in which he is still engaged. He is oneof the very first settlers of this community and is well known and respected throughout this entire section of the country. In 1879 he was elected to the office of county assessor, which position hefilled faithfully and competently. At another time he served the people of Moreland Township as justice of the peace for twelve consecutive years. Besides these bits of history, Mr. Metz built as the third business house in Oran, which was used by William Pobst as a saloon building. In his place can always be found a full line of family groceries, and courteous treatment is accorded to one and all alike.
