They later moved to Helix, Umatilla, Oregon and then on to Athena, Umatilla, Oregon. In 1910 He went to Colorado and went to work for John Smith at Gary, Morgan, Colorado. When he was about 20 he worked a homestead, but being too young, he gave it up to avoid trouble with the law. It is believed by some that this was the time when he became known as Frank. In 1914 he married Clara Josephine Hellman and homesteaded about 15 miles from Woodrow, Washington, Colorado. Only a few years after his marriage, William (Frank) bought the first tractor in that part of the country. It was a one-wheel-drive Case which moved more slowly than his team of work horses.
