 bold">What is a Government Gazette?
This was an official publication of all Government notices, including the operation dates of Acts of Parliament. Once the notice in the Gazette is published, the public is deemed to have notice of it. Produced once a week with numerous 'Supplementary' issues, the 1891 Government Gazette consists of over 5300 pages.

What will I find in a Victorian Government Gazette?
In this enormous Government Gazette, you will find information on tens of thousands of ordinary people and localities, small and large. You will find details on land transactions, court notices, notice of acts, tenders and contracts, police auctions of stolen property, statistics, unclaimed letters, impoundmentsof cattle and horses, reward notices, and much more ... even the occasional execution.

Unique feature of this years worth of issues are:

  • Land Tax Register and Valuations

  • Licence Renewals

  • Patent and Trade Mark applications, approvals, rejections etc.
  • Vital Statistics for Melbourne and Suburbs

  • Register of Medical Practitioners

  • Dentists' Register

  • Estates of Deceased Persons

  • Public Service Lists

  • Agricultural Statistics
  • Roll of Merchants and Traders
  • Roll of Shipowners and Seamen
  • Classified Roll of State Schools
  • Occupants of Crown Lands
  • Victorian Railways ... and more

How can this information help me?
Government Gazettes contain a vast amount of historical and genealogical information. Now that they are on CD you can search for any number of names or places easily. But they offer researchers much morethan simply names and places. They will help you reconstruct events and circumstances in the life of individuals and communities.

Examples entries ... taken fromthe 20 March 1891 issue:
DISMISSAL

fascinating information, both historical and genealogical.

Gazettes includes information such as land transactions, legal notices, insolvency notices, ecclesiastical and next of kin notices, impoundments, private notices, patent applications, absconders and deserters, as well as missing people, shipping and emigration notices, partnerships, licences, contracts, government institutions and positions, statistics and much more. If you've got an interest in Victoria during this period - you're bound to find something of interest.

Some significant lists for 1889 include:

  • Register of Medical Practitioners

  • Dentists' Register

  • Prospecting Boards - members

  • Rolls of Electors Rectified (corrections)

  • Rolls of Merchants, Traders, Shipowners, seamen, etc

  • Estates of Deceased Persons

  • Land Tax Register & Valuation

  • Occupants of Crown Lands - rent in arrears

  • Lease applications, renewals, transfers etc
     ... plus numerous other lists

Government Gazettes are a much underused source, partly because of their availability (usually only found in select archive offices or libraries), and partly because of their sheer bulk. Now that these are CD-ROM, everyone has access to this amazing resource.

This set of three large volumes, which totals over 4600 pages, has now been digitised and released on fully searchable CD-ROM, and contains all issues that were released in Victoria for the year 1889.
