She was pursued bymany men, but she was very particular inwho she would date. She metmy father, Gustav Mikat, on Belle Isle Beach, Detroit, Michigan in1930 and somehow knew that this was the right man for her. Sophie wasfinancially astute and was able to save enough money so she and Gustavcould take a trip to Germany in 1935, buy a home in 1936, and build abeautiful home on a 150 acre farm in 1945. When Sophie, Gustav, and their son Kurtreturned to Germany to visitin1935, she was approached by her former employer, Max Gundelfinger.He asked her if she would sponsor him to come to the U.S.A., becausehe knew it was not safe for him to remain in Germany since he was aJew. He did come to the U.S.A. and was very grateful for thissponsorship until hisdeath in 1963. Every Christmas, Max and AlvineGundel (changed name) would send everyone in Sophie's family at leastthree gifts each, and included candy and liquors for the holidays.Even after his death, his wife would continue to send Sophie a gift ofmoney for Christmas. In 1958, Sophie was devastated, Gustav asked for a divorce. She nevergot over it. In 1959 to 1964, Sophie and her sister, Gertrude ownedtheCoffee Cup Restaurant in Yale, Michigan. Shesold the farm andmoved to Yale, Michigan. Evelyn and her sons, Mark and Jeffrey,would visit heroften and loved her very much. In 1959 sold Carney House to Paul Yuhaez-$29,200. Sophie and I went to Germany in 1971 and 1972 to visit Gertrude whohad moved to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with her father, who haddied in1969. We had many good times there together. We visited relatives, went up mountains, enjoyed the wonderful tortesand food, and listened to concerts in the Garmisch park. We even wenton some bus tours, such as going to Munich, King Ludwig's castle, andOberammergau, where the Passion Plays are performed every ten years. In 1983, moved to Sanborn Memorial Home, Pt. Huron, Mi. Sophie taught me how to deal with finances and use good shoppingtechniques.She was an excellent cook, an accomplished piano player, ameticulous seamstress and a knitting expert, but her best talent wasas an artist, using oil paints. Kurt and Evelyn continue to enjoy hermany pictures. Sophie and I were very close. It took me two months of crying andmourning her death before I was able to get on with my life.
