Marriage to Domenico Pomponio, 1/8/1905 Manhattan, NYC , Certificate.# 1126 or 1426, hard to read.

New York Passenger List, 6/16/1905, Ship named Sardegna. SOPHIA (ZINFERINA) FERRARA POMPONIO CA 1886 – JULY 20/1954 Draft 4: September 28, 2007, 2006 Sophia, aka Zifferina, Zifferosa, Henrietta Pomponio was born in Pollutri, Italy in 1886. She entered the United States through EllisIsland as Zifferina Ferrara with her mother, Raffaela Tzoili, and her brother, Vincenzo Ferrara. Evidently her mother was remarried to a man named Filotio in Italy before they emigrated (Familysearch.org). It is thought that there was atleast two other brothers, Michael and Louis. It seems that Louis remained in Italy and Michael did not come over with Sophia and her mother (Aunt Eva through E-mail of John Hamption). Louis may have become an architect in Milan, Italy.Vincenzo may have continued on to South America as very little is known about them (Phone conversation with Aunt Faith 3/23/06). The three arrived at Ellis Island on the SS Roma, from Naples, on September 11, 1903. The ship’s manifest indicates that Zifferina, passenger # 102687010196, could read and write. The final destination was listed as the home of Donalo Raizieri (difficult to read) whoresided at 66 Spring Street in New York City. (Ellis Island Records) At some point, Raffaela and some of her sons went to South America for a while. Theycame back and eventually Michael became a cobbler, married and had a daughter named Rose. Eva and Kenneth Hampton attended the wedding. (E-mail from John Hampton) Raffaela was practiced the traditional Italian methods healing. When Domenico Pomponio broke his leg doing construction work he lived with Raffaela andher family for several months. The mother and daughter did not think much of his bad habits, but he fell in love with Sophia, changed his ways, and they weremarried in Manhattan on January 8, 1905 (Familysearch.net) Dominick kept hisword and changed his ways. He became a very strong member of the Italian Baptist Church located at 140 Devoe Street, Brooklyn, New York. They had ten (10) children that survived birth: (There is some question that their may have been a third child that died before reaching the age of five.) Ermindo I (ca 1906 –ca 1908), died as a young child from encephalitis. Camille (July 13, 1909 - April 1988) Ermindo II (5/15/11 – 2/5/93) Angelina (ca 1914 – Jan 1919), died from severe burns. Angelo Carlo (Charles 4/11/15 – 7/9/1989), Raffaella (Viola born ca 1917) Dominick Jr. (12/7/18 – 9/14/90) Eva (born 8/6/21)Arthur (12/16/1924 – 2/ /85) Faith (born 4/26/1927) When Camille reached the age of five (5) the family had a huge party to celebrate the event. Shewas the first child to reach that age. During World War II Sophia worked asa nurse. Carole Yates e-mailed a picture Sophia in her nurses uniform standingwith Dominick Sr. (E-mail Carole Yates March 22, 2006). Grandmother Sophiaseems to have had visions and premonitions. After Angelina was severely burnedand was still in the hospital G’ma had a premonition that her child was dying.Grandpa and she rushed to the hospital to discover that she had died. Anotherincident occurred while Faith was working. G’ma started screaming that she (Faith) was dead – no it’s her hand – no, no- it’s not Faith. The young girl working next to Faith had gotten her hand caught in the machinery and had become severely injured. These episodes may have caused friction between her and the church. (Phone conversation with Alice 2/18/06). The family remained active in the church through the 1940’s and beyond. Aunt Faith worked for the American BaptistConvention and the World Council of Churches for many years and Marian Pomponio, Charles and Marian’s daughter, also worked there at some time. When GG’ma died in Italy, Sophia got up during the night and said to G’pa “My mother just came to me and said she has passed on.” The next day Uncle Michael Ferrara was walking up the street towards the house carrying a telegram. G’pa said to him “She already knows but you can go in and tell her again.” (Phone conversation withVincent Padula 3/5/06) Sophie also worked at home sewing buttons onto cards for a sales man. He would drop off the buttons and cards. Marian (daughter of Charles and Marian) would go to religious instruction at the 1st Baptist church at 140 Devoe Street and then walk to the store/house at 22 Maspeth Ave. a distance of about 3 or 4 blocks. Marian would separate and sort the buttons while G’masewed them on to the cards. Her father, Charles, would stop by, collect Marian, and they would walk a few blocks to 72 Conselyea St. Towards the end of G’ma’s life she made multi-colored aprons as gifts for every woman in the family. Marian still has hers – it has never been used. (Phone conversation with Marian March 2006) When Dominick Sr. died in 1949, G’ma Sophia had Angelina’s body moved from its original grave site to the family plot. Both graves are located inLinden Hill Methodist Cemetery in Ridgewood, Queens, NY. Uncle Arthur looked over the finances of the house. When he closed the store he either called orsent bills to customers that had not paid the bill as yet. Many paid and he and G’mom went to the bank and took out a loan against the house to serve as income for her. When she died the loan was repaid and the remaining assets were though to be distributed among the family members. (Ken Hampton through e-mail fromJohn Hampton 3/18/06) Sophia died in a hospital in Southington, Connecticut. Her body was returned to Brooklyn by the family with out proper authorization. She, Dominic, Angelina, Arthur and Arthur’s wife Marilyn are buried in the family plot. The cemetery is in Linden Hill Cemetery, 52-22 Metropolitan Avenue, Ridgewood, NY 113385. (E-mail from J. Hampton and Arthur Pomponio)Marian’s apron made by G’ma Pomponio. “Marilyn Ruth” isMarilyn Bedell Pomponio, Uncle Arthur’s wife. There is also a child that was astill born that is buried in the plot.
