Granberry Etheridge was born May 25, 1839, probably in Nash or Edgecombe County, North Carolina. The late Hugh Johnston, historian from Wilson County, North Carolina, speculated the following: Granberry Etheridge was born in Edgecombe County and was the illegitimate son of James Bullock Woodard (1793 - 1863) and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Pittman Etheridge. Elizabeth Pittman was married to Frederick Etheridge on August 24, 1829. The marriage was bonded by Reddick Etheridge. The date of Frederick Etheridge's death is unknown but he was living as late as May 16, 1832 (Edgecombe County Deed Book 20, p. 537).
Some years after the death of Frederick Etheridge, Elizabeth had a son, Granberry Etheridge. Granberry's death certificate (on file in the Register of Deeds Office, Wilson County, North Carolina) stated his father was Redman Etheridge. This was erroneous according to Mr. Johnston. Elizabeth Etheridge gave birth to a daughter, Huldah, on June 6, 1846. In the 1850 Edgecombe County census Huldah is listed as the only family member with her mother listed as head of household. A few houses down is James Bullock Woodard. Elizabeth Etheridge is listed as Louisa Etheridge, a domestic, with daughter Huldah, living with the family of James B. Barnes in the 1860 Wilson County, census (Wilson County was formed in 1855 from parts of Edgecombe, Nash, Wayne and Johnston counties).
Not much is known about Granberry Etheridge until 1858. On August 12 of that year he married Kizziah Williamson, daughter of Isaac Williamson and Sallie Mercer. James Farmer Mercer, Sallie's brother and a Justice of the Peace, officiated. The wedding took place at Sallie Williamson's home (Isaac and Sallie had divorced sometime earlier). By the time of the 1860 Wilson County census, Granberry andKizziah had a son, John T. Etheridge, and held property worth $1330.
At the age of 23, Granberry Etheridge, occupation farmer, enlisted in Company A, 55th Regiment (Infantry), North Carolina State Troops of the Confederate States Army. He participated in the Battle ofthe Wilderness in Virginia where he was wounded in the right leg May 5, 1864. He stayed in a Confederate hospital in Virginia until November 17, 1864, when he was retired to the Invalid Corps. He accepted parole from the Federals at Goldsboro, North Carolina May 8, 1865. A few years before his death an abscess developed on his leg at the site of his wound. Eventually the minie ball that was neverremoved worked its way to the surface and fell out.
Granberry and Kizziah Etheridge amassed much land in Wilson County which was passed on to their children. They lived in a log cabin near Contentnea Creek on the southeast corner of the present day I-95 and NC 42 interchange. They planted, harvested, combed, spun and wove cotton into fabric. They eventually built a white frame house just north of their cabin. This house stood on the side of NC 42 before it was destroyed in the mid 1970's when construction of the interstate began. The house was owned at the time by Cornelius and Margaret Jordan, who I knew as Uncle Neil and Aunt Margaret. A dirtroad ran north from NC 42 beside the house. Down this road about a mile was the house where I grew up.
Kizziah Etheridge died in Wilson County June 8, 1914 and was buried in a family plot behind the family home. Granberry Etheridge followed her in death November 23, 1921 and was laid to rest beside hiswife. When the Etheridge homeplace was torn down Granberry and Kizziah Etheridge's remains were moved down the road to Contentnea Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery.
