Nice to hear from you. Thank you for the document on Henry Helm's
children. I have not seen that one before.
I'm sorry but I don't have a picture of Margaret Lee Helm. I do have a
couple of pictures you might like, however. A couple of years ago I
accompanied my wife to Washington, D.C. where she had a conference to
attend. Not being part of the conference, I rented a car and drove out
to Winchester, Va. to find George Helm's grave. I found it was the
oldest marked grave in the cemetery. It was red sandstone on the front
with the inscription almost completely worn away. Luckily, on the back,
someone had a monumentmaker attach a marble stone with an inscription in
German.
Perhaps you have been to Winchester. If not, I am attaching a picture of
the back of the stone. If you know what the marking on the top means,
let me know. Maybe it has to do with being a tailor as George was.
The second picture is what I think is the cabin John Clemens (father of
Samuel Clemens) allowed George and Catherine Helm to live in when John
Clemens left Fentress County and took his family to Hannibal, Mo. John
Clemens, in a deed to Berry Gatewood, sold his property to Gatewood with
the stipulation that George and Catherine be allowed to remain in the
house as long as they wanted. This was written in the deed. John
Clemens was the clerk of the Fentress County court when George lost his
land due to his erroneously purchasing the land from someone who did not
own it. Later the owners claimed the land. There was a long court case
involving the issue. He lost everything. I'm sure Clemens felt sorry
for his neighbors, George and Catherine, and allowed them to stay in his
original cabin on his land. John was then living with his family in
Jamestown, the county seat. This cabin was removed from Fentress County
a few years ago when the Museum of the Appalachias was opened near
Norris, Tennessee. It is part of the museum. It is called the "Mark
Twain Cabin" eventhough Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) never lived in it.
He was born a year after the family arrived in Missouri.
You have done a great job on your website. The pictures are wonderful.
Nothing like pictures of our deceased relatives. They give us a better
feel for our heritage.

George Helm was the son of George and Dorothea Helm of Winchester, Frederick, Virginia. This couple were merchants of the city. George was of German origins. His tombstone was inscribed in both Germanand English. He was buried in the Reformed Lutheran Churchyard in Winchester. He signed his name in German script on one of the land documents of the time. George, Jr. (b. 1751) served in the Revolution from Frederick County, Virginia. He was captured by the British but later released. After his release, he again joined the Continental troops. After the war, George and Catherine took their children first to Montgomery County, Virginia then Grayson County, Virginia. By 1805 they entered Kentucky in Cumberland County and finally moved into today's Fentress County, Tennessee as some of that counties earliest residents. One son, Frederick, served in the War of 1812. Family tradition is that he fought at the Battle of New Orleans. The children and descendants of George and Catherine Helm spread far and wide throughout the United States

| Beschreibung | um 2009 veröffentlichte ich die erste Version meines Vorfahrenbaumes in GEDBAS. Heute 2014 kann man diese als überholt bezeichen und ersetzen durch die neue Version von 2014. Diese Datenbank enthällt möglichst alle Vorkommen von Schmiers weltweit in zwei großen Familiensträngen, die beide aus Westfalen stammen. Zusätzlich, wenn alles klappte, auch einige Streufunde, die noch nicht zugeordnet werden konnten. Mein Zweig stammt aus dem Kreis Steinfurt, ist in Westfalen ausgestorben und lebt als "sächsischer Zweig" weiter. Der andere große Strang stammt aus der Umgebung Cappenberg und hat zahlreiche Nachkommen in USA und Deutschland. In den vergangenen Jahren ist meine Forschung deutlich vorangeschritten. Beim Export hakte ich an "lebende Personen ausschließen". Hoffentlich vergaß ich bei keiner Person mit unbekanntem Todesdatum das Häkchen bei 'verstorben' zu setzen... Ich würde mich über Fragen zu diesen Familienbäumen freuen. |
