Ermordung, Florenz I. folgte 1049 seinem in einer von zahlreichen Fehden gefallenen Bruder Dietrich IV. Er unterwarf sich dem Kaiser und behauptete damit sein Erbe. Er setzte die traditionellen Fehden fort und wurde wegen der Rivalität um Friesland 1061 durch Markgrafen Ekbert I. von Braunschweig, Friesland und Meißen ermordet. Seine Frau Gertrud von Sachsen heiratete in zweiter Ehe Robert I. "der Friese", Graf von Flandern.
