Biography J. P. Baden was born in Hanover, Germany, March 24, 1851, his motherdying when he was two days old. His father was a farmer in verymoderate circumstances and at the tender age of 7 years he was put towork herding sheep in the summer time. When 15 years old he with hisbrothers came to America, stopping first at Alton, Ill. He there wentinto a tobacco factory and cut tobacco, later making cigars. He workedby the piece, and by working from as early as 5 o'clock in the morningto midnight he was enabled to earn as much as $25 per week. He atfirst attended public school in the winter, working during the summerand saving his money which he used later to pay his way through JonesCommercial college at St. Louis, where, after several seasons, hereceived his diploma. "His first adventure in business was at Columbus, Kansas, where heopened a small confectionery, but that venture not proving the successhe desired, he went to Independence to work for his brothers. Heclerked in the day time and handled game at night, in that way saving$5,000, with which he commenced business in Winfield in 1879. "His career in Winfield has been phenomenally successful. His everyventure proved successful and everything he touched made him money. His fertile brain early saw the possibilities of the produce businessin this country and the development of that idea has made Winfield themost widely known in the commercial world probably of any city of itssize in the United States. He enlarged his store here until when hesold it to Brady Bros., a few years ago, it was one of the largeststores in Winfield. Since then he has devoted his entire attention tohis mill, one of the biggest and best in the state, his ice plant andcold storage the largest plant west of St. Louis, and his producebusiness. "Mr. Baden possessed the talent of making money to a remarkable degreebut he never prostituted the talent to the sordid love of money. Heenjoyed making money, but it was the love of others that prompted himto action. His life was a model of simplicity and pomp and splendor asa vulgar display of wealth was antagonistic to his nature. He managedhis accumulations as a steward and he realized the responsibility ofthe sacred trust. Every dollar he controlled was kept constantly inthe channels of trade, stimulating business and giving work to theunemployed. "His benefactions amounted to several small fortunes and the extent ofhis charities was not realized or appreciated until his death. Hepractically built, and for several years maintained, St. John'scollege and the Lutheran church. He lived to see the college becomeone of the two colleges in the United States supported by the generalsynod, thus assuring its permanency. He was one of the originators ofthe Chautauqua assembly and remained an active member of the executivecommittee to his death. He was a prime factor in the erection of theobservatory, and one of the most active members of the hospitalassociation. These are only a few prominent instances of hisgenerosity but they serve to show his public spirited nature. When theappeal was made for the Cubans, he was the first to respond and hedonated 10,000 pounds of flour. This was in harmony with his wholelife, he did everything on a big scale, his mind could not conceive ofany other way. Deserving charity never appealed to him in vain andalthough he performed an enormous amount of work he was never too busyto listen to a call for help. The community has not yet fully realizedthe extent of the loss sustained by his death. "January 15, 1878, he was united in marriage to Miss Adelaide E.Ballein, who has been to him a true and noble wife. He was domestic inhis nature and prized his home and family and the seclusion itafforded, above everything else. It was the highest ambition of herwhom he loved to honor, to make his home a haven from the strife heencountered in the world outside. Two sons blessed this union, MartinW., now 21 years old, and Ernest H., 18 years old. His greatest priderested in his boys, and it was his ambition to live to see them reachman's estate and become active, useful members of society. Besides hisimmediate family, he leaves a brother and a sister to mourn his loss."
